Confession time

Here's mine: I'm sick of playing outside (*ducks from things being thrown at me*)

I know, I know...in a few months, I'll be clawing the walls when being stuck inside.  But, for now, especially now that we are getting home later with having to do 2 separate pick ups after work, I'm sick of feeling pressured to take advantage of the weather and go outside.  it makes the evening feel rushed to me to get home, change out of my work clothes, then take the kids out, only to have to round them back up and drag them inside to get dinner on the table.  I'm ready to come home, put my PJ's on, and relax in the house.

Post your confession of the day here!!

Re: Confession time

  • I think it is dumb for me to walk EJ to the bus stop. It is at the end of our street (so 3 houses away).  I let her play on the street unsupervised. Why can't I just watch her from the house? Especially since there are never less than 3 other parents at the stop.

feeling especially antisocial today, and K is working from home and in a chatty mood. I had to yell at him, that I just told him i was feeling antisocial and he can't then come and complain to me about something seconds later.

I want my pool closed already, cause I am over taking care of it right now. The new winter cover should be in this week, and they said they would close the pool for us too since we bought like a crap ton of stuff from them. But I just want it done already.
  • I judged the new zumba instructor at my gym and feel like I could do better.  I think he's fairly new, and I know it takes years to get really good, but I'm spoiled and used to good instructors.  He doesn't seem to have rhythm - something that you kind of need.  He also doesn't put his arms out straight when he should and it's just kind of messy.   And some of the moves he was doing I was like "WTF! That's not a zumba move!"    I really have no room to judge though, because at least he's up there doing it.  I silently judge and while I feel like I *could* do better, I never would.  Because I could never, ever be all peppy and in front of a group leading them.   You kind of need to be a "woo girl" to be a fitness instructor, and I'm probably the farthest thing from a woo girl that there is.
  • Emmy - is your backyard fenced in? Can you let them play outside in the back (with windows/screen door or whatever) open so you can hear them while you make dinner? It makes it so much easier on everyone if they can do that just while you prep dinner at least.

My confession: I'm in such a dinner funk. My crockpot is in a bin at the bottom of a pile in the garage and I wish I could dig it out because I am so unmotivated to cook anything lately. I think it's a culmination of problems: I didn't cook for like two months with DH being away, then moving, etc.; then DH's schedule is one where I never know what time he'll be home - what's the point of cooking something nice bc the kids are picky and it's not as good cold or heated up?! So, there has been quite a few pizza, hot dog, chicken nugget and hamburger meals. I really need to get back on track!

  • Clare- no fence.  I think Jake would be ok out there by himself if I was just in the kitchen with the windows open, but I don't trust Liam.  I feel comfortable coming in for a minute or so at a time, to pop something in the oven or whatever, but nothing longer than that :(

and I hear you on the dinners, we need to get back on track, summer completely threw us off.  I did spend some time last weekend prepping some stuff and making 3 freezer meals, so if I can get in the habit of doing that at least every few weeks, I feel like it will help.

  • That's smart, Emmy - but can I ask what did you prep/make for the freezer? I'm so oblivious to these things.

And I totally understand you - I don't trust Conall outside a nonfenced in area either - and he's a bit older than Liam! *sigh*

  • Clare: I bought a big pack of ground beef at Sam's Club and browned it all (about 3 lbs).  divided it up into 1 pound portions and froze it; makes it a bit easier for taco or chili nights (and it thaws much more quickly when it's already mashed up like that, rather than in a big chunk)

I was already sauteeing chicken for something I was making that night, so I just added in another 2 breasts and froze that, diced up.  that's good for quesidillas or other quick wraps.

I also made a lasagna (i've done that as a freezer meal in the past, it thaws and heats well...I just don't cook it before freezing, I only put it together)  And I did this soup, I just left out the pasta, I'll add that in when I heat it up.

chili also freezes well, as does crockpot chicken salsa.  So sometimes I'll make double batches of those and freeze the leftovers.

    Hope that helps!

  • I am sick and both kids are sick.  Dh had to go out of town for work and I am irrationally mad at him.  He is the only healthy one and he gets leave?!?!?  My youngest has been waking up 3-4 times a night for the past couple of months.  It's not fun to deal with when healthy and it really sucks when I'm sick.  I am stuck here with 2 sick kids and I'm pretty sure I have an ear infection (do adults get those?)

Sorry that's more of a whine than a confession.   Did I mention that dh is going to be having a nice quiet dinner at a restaurant tonight...  :-L

  • We spent $900 on groceries last month--which is ridiculous considering we don't even buy beef at the store (we buy a half a cow yearly).  I really have no idea why it was so expensive.  Previously I was keeping our bill around $350.

I will say with DH being home him and the kids eat a lot more snack and convenience foods--and he also does some of the grocery shopping, but surely that can't add up to the tune of $550, can it?

Clare--I've fallen out of the habit of making freezer meals, but it worked out great when I did it.  Some of my favorites were chili, wedding soup (add the noodles just before eating); breaded porkchops (bread; freeze; pan fry brown and then bake); whole chicken breasts (I'd make up 3-4 marinades, then freeze the raw,  bone in breasts in the marinade.  then just unthaw and bake); and this crock pot pork roast recipe.  I would just prep the roast, freeze it in a bag with the veggies (except potatoes) and then pull it out and plop everyting int he crock pot.

Most of my freezer cooking was more prep work prior to freezing than actually cooking and then freezing.

It does - thank you! I never thought to brown the meat and then freeze it! I'm so blonde sometimes..

And thanks Amy - I really need to start thinking ahead, and these ideas help!

  • I'm making Heather's Halloween costume and for the past two nights I have been looking at the pattern but not doing anything with it. I need to get off my a$$ and start pinning and cutting tonight.

Also, I am impatiently waiting for my tech editor to get my pattern back to me so I can publish it already and move on to the next one. Trying to be patient and failing horribly.

Lastly, we didn't do much for DH's birthday on Sunday. We got him a present and an apple tart and sang, but it doesn't come close to the things I did before kids. I feel a little bad, but I'm also exhausted and I know he made an amazon order last week, so oh well.

  • I never take the kids out to pay before dinner. 90% of the time in nice weather the kids are outside playing at aftercare and daycare when I get them, so I know they've had recent outdoor time. After I do pickup we go home, they get a snack and I make dinner. Only about 40% of the time do we even make it out in nice weather after dinner to play.

Emmy, you're way ahead of me there. Don't feel guilty about it.

I'm happy Steve's working on putting in a new kitchen at the lake, but I'm in a panic about so many upcoming weekends solo with the kids, since the weekend is usually our family time.

  • I am also over playing outside.  I feel like I have to maximize every second of nicer weather, otherwise I feel guilty and lazy.  I am sure I will regret saying this when January and February roll around.

We are getting family pictures taken in a few weeks and I have spent the entire day looking for outfit combinations for us to wear.  The boys are easy because it will be just some combination of buttdon down/sweater/sweater vest, but I can't find anything for me!
  • Meghan--what are you putting the boys in?  maybe we can help find something for you!!

Lisa-I'm glad to hear that I'm not the only one who doesn't always get them out.  I feel this pressure to be out there, but at the same time, some days it comes down to either playing outside or getting a decent meal on the table before everyone starts losing their sh!t.

  • I really, truly don't want to rush the growing up thing, but I absolutely can't wait until I don't have to pack diapers. They're taking up precious shoe space in my suitcase! ;)

I've taken to using Amazon Prime and having them shipped if I'm going somewhere for more than a few days and I'm flying.

I'll be shipping a bunch to Florida in November :P
