Re: Apparently Eleanor & Park is a challenged book in Minnesota

  • I just started reading this last night and I already love it. How sad that a couple of parents ruined what could have been a great experience for these students.

  • This is my county and I'm so embarrassed by these random parents who decided that they have the right to choose what everyone else reads. People in my county also voted for Michelle Bachmann too, so what can I say? I have to move!

  • This irritates me so much. E&P is such a beautifully written, honest, poignant story about adolescence. I'll bet none of those parents have ever even read it.

  • Probably not.  Remember the idiot a couple of years ago who challenge the DICTIONARY being in his kid's class because his kid looked up swear/dirty words in it?

    People are stupid.

I hadn't heard about that. I cannot stop laughing. What a moron.

Something like that happened around here. A parent challenged the dictionary and tried to get it removed from classroom because their kid looked up "oral sex"

I'm afraid to look at the link because I want to read this book but don't want to know anything about it.

    Having said that...

    It's slippery as waterweed.
  • It's so unfortunate that the wishes of a couple parents totally out does the rest, including educators.  Punishment for the librarians, really?  I bet none of these parents have Harry Potter in their houses either.

I didn't read all the questions and answers, so I don't know if this was addressed.  Do you think there are ever a group of parents in support of the books? I mean, I'm sure there are, but do they come out and fight like these parents are?

I'm not in there shoes, but stuff like this truly irks me.  It makes me want to get involved in support of the Librarians.

  • One of my 8th graders was reading E&P last week. She just told me today that she gave it to her mom to read, and they discussed it in the car on the way to school today. #doingitright

I told the student about this drama and she said, "The swearing isn't even the worst part!" LOL

This makes me sad. I had a horrible home life as a teen, and I had my own "Park" to inspire me to see the silver lining. Reading this book as an adult, was kind of comforting, like hugging teenage me. I think a lot of teens that don't have a perfect life would benefit from seeing themselves on these ages, and see their own beauty and strength. How stupid to rob someone of that because there are a few bad words sprinkled in.
  • This makes me so mad!  Especially when I read about what else the Parents Action League has done to that county.
