XP: Help picking exterior paint color

Hi Guys,

I know this may not be the right board, but you all have some great ideas so I'm hoping you may be able to help me. We recently bought a new house and are getting a new roof and gutters and we will also be painting the exterior of the house at the same time. We finally decided on the shingle color, but we're undecided on what color would look good for the rest of the house. The shingle color we picked is called Autumn Brown, and is a warm brown color (pic below). We are also planning on keeping the trim and gutters white, but I'm lost on what would look good for the main color of the house. I'm thinking something in a warm tone would look best but I would love some suggestions. For what it's worth DH says he doesn't care what color we paint it (he rarely has an opinion on home decorating stuff) and is leaving the decision up to me. We also have no HOA or restrictions on paint color. Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

  • You can also post this on Decorating and Renovating. But, they will probably want a house pic too.

What color are your neighbors' homes since you probably don't want to be matchy-matchy with them?

Thanks for the idea about posting our house. Currently our house is a sad looking blue/green color (it's sad because it hasn't been painted in who knows how long). Here is a pic. Our neighbor to the left has a sunny yellow house with red brick, our neighbor to the right has a light beige with hints of green house. A lot of the houses in our neighborhood have been painted various shades of light brown or various shades of yellow or grey, but for the most part they all look like they're the original (lighter) paint colors. One of our neighbors painted their house a darker color (dark brown) and we both like the way it looks, so we're leaning towards something like that.

OK, it won't let me add the photo, but here's an attachment! Just kidding, it won't let me attach it either, so you can see our house at the link below. http://tinypic.com/r/140bs7l/5

  • Love it! It's nice looking. I like the look of stark white trim and deep brown. Personally, I also like red doors, which would look nice with the white and dark brown.
  • Thanks! :)

  • I would choose a lighter color because there's less fading to deal with, which equates to less upkeep. I'm just lazy like that. lol  Also, painting a dark color may make cooling your house more difficult because the house will be absobring the sun's energy. If you live in an area with warm summers, this could be a significant pita (or, conversely, a bonus if you live in a cold area!).
  • That kind of looks like our roof color.  And although we stuck with our home's original exterior and shingle color, we really like it.

Good luck and have fun with your new home! :-)
  • Thanks for the suggestions guys! I hadn't thought about if we used a dark color how much heat it would retain and since we now live in GA that will have to be something to keep in mind. I like the color you used justamarried! I bet it looks great with the dark roof!

  • I would go maybe a sage green or even an olive or khaki
