Another WWGPM do?

I am attending a family party that my mom is hosting on Sunday.

I am already anxious about the extended family members I'll be seeing, how hot the tiny apartment is going to get with 50+ people in it and now I don't know what to eat.  My mom said she ordered lunch meat sandwiches from some deli and is doing a soft cheese plate with feta and brie... all pregnant, no-nos. If I wasn't worried about where it came from or the open-house type feel where food could be left out, I would be less concerned. Would you eat it anyways or bring something else? I can't imagine not eating all afternoon, especially since I'll be helping serve and host the party.
Congrats to my TTC buddy Madeline! Cheering for all the strong 3T ladies!

Re: Another WWGPM do?

  • I'd probably bring something else. It's more than likely not an issue but I wouldn't want to worry about it and just have peace of mind.

  • It's *probably* fine to just eat what she's serving, but if you're worried about it, eat before you go and plan to eat right when you leave.  Pack a snack or something to eat while you're there.  Kind of inconsiderate for your mom to not have something you feel comfortable eating...

  • Ditto what the ladies said. Eat right before you get there, bring snacks, and eat right after you leave. Although, it's most likely fine to eat those things, I don't blame you for being concerned. I don't think anyone would side-eye you for eating something else anyways, with pregnancy cravings and all. ;)

Also, bring a bottle of water to sip on while you're there and try sitting as much as possible. Both will help counteract the heat and reduce the chance you'll feel dizzy.

  • I eat lunch meat regularly, so I don't really see that being an issue. It's one of those things that people are either concerned with eating during pregnancy, or they're not. I also have feta in my salads. Just do what you're comfortable with, but I wouldn't stress about it.

  • i probably wouldn't eat them... but that said, if the cheeses are pasteurized, they're fine to eat.  Also, if you want, you could always microwave the meat from the sandwiches until it's sizzling to eliminate any worry.

  • I wouldn't eat it. Although if there's a microwave or frying pan available, I would just heat it up and eat. Starving would be the worst thing.

There must be salads. Etc or other things your mom keeps in the house a that you can eat. I'd not, I would volunteer to bring a pasta salad, quiche, casserole, Mac and cheese sort of thing that you and the guests can eat.

It's not at my parents which is harder. If it was, for sure, that would be easy. I might bring a salad to add to the menu. Or at least volunteer to make something like that. :) That's a great idea - thanks!

You eat salad but not lunch meat? I'm more wary of fresh veggies than meats...

  • I'd eat it. I would try to get to the party early so I would be eating it when it's first set out. If not, I'm sure there are other things that you can find to eat or, like pp said, bring something to share that you can eat.

I ate lunch meat with DS, and he's normal. I've eaten lunch meat this time too, and so far, everything's normal. I don't eat it every day; in fact it's a rarity but I wouldn't worry about it, personally.

  • I think that everyone gave you good tips on what to do about food whether you bring a salad, snack or heat the lunch meat up. About the anxiety, I find with my anxiety if I go in with a plan I usually feel better. So like if you start to feel overwhelmed you can hide out in the bathroom or go for a walk and if you need to leave come up with your excuse now so you don't have to stress about telling everyone why you are leaving. HTH!

It's probably why your son is Asian. H wanted me to avoid lunch meats during pregnancy, which, whatever. But if there was nothing else to eat, If eat it.

  • If I'm unsure about food at a party I eat a snack a head of time and then eat what I can. I don't eat meat so I have had many cheese sandwiches in my day.

  • Also in terms of lunch meat I think the risk is small, but highest with turkey.

To each her own.  There were only 3 things my very laid-back doctor told me not to eat/drink- lunch meats, soft cheese and alcohol.  Even making my own educated decision, I would never go against what my doctor said because I could never live my life with the what-ifs. Yes veggies (and almost everything) we eat have the potential to carry harmful bacteria, lunch meats are not exactly healthy while veggies and fruit are.  In reality, the chance that anyone would get listeria from food is tiny, tiny, tiny but if a pregnant woman got it, it would have worse consequences.  It's not like a pregnant woman has an increased chance of getting it.

Anyway, I don't judge or much care what any other woman eats or drinks during pregnancy.  Are you somehow judging me?

No I was just curious... I eat salad too. My doctor said lunch meat was fine as long as it didn't sit out. I just thought that if you ate salad you'd eat lunch meat... Geeze...

  • I totally agree with @PinkInProvence. My doc also said no to lunch meat. I wouldn't eat the sandwiches. Most cheeses in the US are pasteurized, unless they are highly specialized I might nibble but I certainly wouldn't make a meal out of it. I would bring food for sure, I get sick when I'm hungry.

My midwife never said anything; I just know the rules from being on the board. I think I'll use that as an excuse anyways :p

  • My doctor wasn't really concerned about the lunch meat thing.  She said the risk is so small.  In fact, I've had a lunch meat sandwich a few times in the last several weeks.  I figure that if it's something that sounds good to me, I'm going to eat it.

  • MRads, his college education isn't paying for itself.

My doctor said the risk of listeria is small, and lunch meat was fine. He recommended the pre sliced tubs since they are kept at a more constant temperature than stuff at a deli counter.

He was/is more concerned about alcohol and certain fish due to mercury levels.
