update re: new urologist

so Ben and I went to see a new urologist this morning.

He is going to put Ben on comid and he also thinks he has a varicocele.

I'm so excited that we may have found a reason for our MFI, but annoyed that I asked our RE several times if Ben needed to see a urologist and he kept saying no.  We did go to one on our own, but she wasn't the best in the area. now we're seeing one of the best in the area.

He said Ben's testosterone levels are normal but on the low side. so they like to see them somewhere between 1000-325 and Ben's were right at 400.  he also said unless he was standing up when he got his ultrasound, the varicocele wouldn't have shown...But when he did Ben's exam he said he felt what he thought was a varicocele in his left testicle.

so I left there really hopeful that Ben's issue might be fixable to a certain degree and pissed off at our RE.

I'm certain if we need to go back to the RE that we'll be going to a new one.

I'd be pretty peeved with the RE telling you you didn't need a urologist, too. Not cool.

  • That is some wonderful news!

Is Ben hopeful with this medication and the new Dr?

Also, I don't know your whole story, but if this medication works for him, will you still need to do any other treatments (IUI, IVF)?  Or will this mean that you can try naturally and hopefully his count will improve?

We're both just happy that there might be something we can do! we've felt so hopeless.

and I don't know if we'll still need to do IUI or IVF again.  I think that will depend on if the clomid helps him and if he really does have a varicocle.

His numbers aren't terrible, really its the morphology and mobility and the DR said that if he does have a varicocle than once thats fixed it will help the morp and mobility.

don't apologize. I don't know how anyone could keep everyones stories straight here! ha theres a lot of us.

  • I am so glad you got a second opinion and have a plan now!  I hope this works for you guys!!

  • Sorry to be chiming in late, was on vacation the end of last week.

Wow, I can't believe the RE didn't have you go to a urologist sooner.  My OB did our initial testing, and sent DH straight to a urologist with his borderline motility and low morph.

My H had a varicocele in each testicle, and just had the surgery to correct about 6 weeks ago.  If y'all end up going that route, and you have any questions, I'm happy to tell you about our experience.

I'm glad you have a path forward that may help you get KTFU way easier than with IVF!

@mseale yes we're very upset with the RE.  again, we did go see a urologist, but not the best. and its upsetting since the best MFI urologist was located right across the street!

are you struggling with MFI? sorry I wish I knew more about your journey! when do you find out if the surgery helped?

  • @amccul20 Well, I'm glad you found one that thinks they can help.

Yes, all my tests seems normal, but DH has borderline motility and low morph.  His strict morph was coming in at 0% (they want it higher than 4%).  He had the surgery 6 weeks ago.  He will go in for a check in 6 weeks (3 months post surgery), but the doctor said we probably wo't see an improvement then.  6 months post surgery is when you should see an improvement, but for some it can take up to a year.  Dr said fixing the varicocele will correct the issues 70% of the time.  I've told myself I've just got to chill out until next year.  Hopefully we will get a good report and be able to conceive naturally then!

I think you said you had IVF.  Did you do that or ICSI?  According to our doctor, if the surgery doesn't bring up his morph, IVF won't give us any better odds, and we would need to ICSI.

  • @mseale we did do IVF with ICSI. we only had 4 mature eggs to work with though. all 4 fertilized and lasted to day 5 but they said they weren't quite where they wanted them and wanted to see what another day would do and none of them survived to day 6.

I think part of our issue was our RE didn't stimulate me enough..or his timing with retreival was bad.  I have never had an issue ovulating and all tests show I have lots and lots of eggs so why after all those meds I only had 9 eggs to retreive is beyond me.  I want to call it an issue with the dr.

we won't go back to the RE if we need to go through IVF again.

  • @amccul20 Aw, that IVF had to have been hard.

But, it sounds like you found a urologist that can help treat the problem, and not just give you lip service.  I know we went to one and he didn't give us many answers, but the second one told us exactly what we needed to know, what options we had, etc.  Hopefully he gets you the help you need!
