AW your financial goals!

We have been trying to pay of H SL as fast as we can but a hockey injury/ER visit for him and a $750 vet bill have hurt our efforts.

On the bright side! We are officially a third of the way there! We started with $33,134 and after payments from last month we are down to $22,012. We should be done by Christmas 2015 and while he hates watching the money leave the account every month we are incredibly excited to move on with our lives!

Have you met any financial goals or made progress lately?

Re: AW your financial goals!

  • I recently funded H's and my Roth IRAs for 2013.  I usually wait until later in the year but for some reason I was feeling on the ball about it this time.  That sort of hurt - $11,000 out of our account in one fell swoop - but then the stock market was great this week (minus today), so that made me feel better!  I told H I knew I was going to catch the recent upswing... he just rolled his eyes at me :)

Congrats on paying down student loans.  H and I both have private law school debt, so we won't be done with ours for a loooong time.  But we're working on it, slowly but surely.  Lord, that makes me want to start another thread ranting about education debt and how I'm convinced that's going to be the next financial bubble... but I'll try to refrain.

Right now we're saving aggressively for a downpayment on a house.  I think we're still a year and a half away, but I like seeing that pot grow each month.  Truth is, I love our apartment, and I'm in no hurry to move.  While I understand why some people think renting is "throwing your money away," part of me wants to just rent forever.  I like the freedom and being able to see my bank account grow even when the A/C breaks.  But, as H points out, we're hoping to start a family in the next few years.  And I don't think our apartment will make it once we have a LO.  I peaked over at the Bump the other day, and I couldn't believe how big some of that baby gear is.  The jumperoo looks like something out of a sci fi film to me...  So onward with the saving, until we can buy enough space for the crib, bassinet, exersaucer, swing, pack and play, and bouncer (is this the same thing as the exersaucer?).  I keep saying I'm going to be a minimalist when it comes to baby gear, but then I look around and see how much crap I own myself and realize that I'm probably being delusional.

  • Our financial goals have ended up shifting this month.  I have a total of two sleep studies which I could owe roughly $1500 for both sessions but I will try to talk with the hospital to see if I can't get this reduced a little since my insurance will be picking up the bulk of it.  MW is having gall bladder removed on her birthday beginning of next month and we know we will have to pick up roughly 10% of that depending on how her insurance is.  We also had our TV go out so I picked up a decent one for $300 and this is the time of year where our annual and semi-annual bills all come due so I am hoping that we have some money left in our savings accounts at the end of October.

For the near term I will be working on rebuilding our savings accounts to cover for emergencies like this and for my son's preschool tuition next year.  After that we will attack MW's student loans since they started to play guess who holds your loans this year.  They changed hands twice this summer.  By the time these are paid off we will have both cars paid off also.
  • We got married in 2010 and bought a 2006 truck and paid it off in 2 years. In 2011 bought a 2008 SUV and paid it off in 1-2 years. Now we've been debt free but the house for a little while (and also had two kids during all of this) and we're really focusing on paying down principal each month. :) while paying daycare for two.
  • Barring any unforseen major expenses, we're on track to have all of our student loans paid off by Nov 1. I can't wait, I'm so excited. We started with over $50,000 for the two of us, and this was one of the last things we wanted to do before TTC in the spring. Then it will be on to saving for baby related expenses, adding a little more to the e-fund, and starting our fund for our next car. We've worked so hard at this goal so it feels amazing.
  • Congrats on getting those SL paid down! I recently paid off a lot of DH's collections items and paid down the balance on our SleepNumber, which raised both of our credit scores. Our goals right now are to keep saving and preparing to sell our home and buy a new one, in about a year. And to keep paying down loans. I'd like to have one of our personal loans paid off by the time we try to get a new mortgage but I'm not sure we can make that happen.

  • Congrats to everyone who has reached some or part of their goals!

Currently we're working toward paying for some remodeling projects on the house, without dipping into our remodeling fund.  We also want to pay for H's trip to Vegas next month without dipping into our vacation fund. It's going to get tricky, and we're only budgeting for $50/week for groceries/items, but I know we can do it.

Then we're focusing on re-building our vacation fund, and adding more to our E-fund throughout the winter. By being budget conscious, and cutting back on some items. We're also paying extra toward one of H's SL's, but it will be over a year before it's paid off.

  • H just started an amazing job last week (since being laid off from work since July) so finally our financial goals will be moving. He is already starting overtime this Saturday and Sunday, and will most likely add on an hour overtime every day next week. His boss mentioned that he has weekend overtime is madatory overtime, so he will be doing this for a while. The only goal I am focusing on for the remainder of this month is to stay on top of our bills to avoid being late and to stop using our credit cards. I will be tossing all the cards into the safe today.

We are starting completely fresh next month, pretty much starting the first payweek with that paycheck. Whatever is left over from this month will go to the car to fix the catalytic converter. There are a few things we have to take care of first before we can officially start our efund, but I am confident we will be able to do that by the end of October. November will start the CC and we should be done with them by Feb/March.

  • I also forgot that we already have 2,000 saved for our slow time (nov-feb).  We are both self employed and that's when business goes down a bit.  Last year I about had a meltdown because I didn't realize how much less business DH has in the winter so I calculated what we would need extra every month to make me feel at peace :)

  • 2 weeks ago I paid off the rest of my student loans!! :)  Next month I'll be paying off my CareCredit (no interest promo) for my Invisalign and then in December, I'll have my finale signature loan paid off!  I'll be completely debt free (aside from a small mortgage) by the end of this year! I'm so excited.

Keep up the great work everyone!

    Married 6/10/09 in Bermuda.
  • I finally buckled down and did serious budgeting for the first time. That's allowing us to tighten a little of the money we were wasting without thinking about. That's freeing up some extra cash for savings and allowing me to see how our financial goals (Roth IRA funding, house downpayment) are actually moving along at a good clip. I feel more secure about money then ever in my life. This is amazing.
  • I don't remember the last time we went out to eat, or bought lunch at work!  That means extra money into the savings!

  • Ok, I realize that in the over all sense of things for most people, this is a very small thing to do, but we (finally!) bought a car! :) Nothing fancy, not new, but we don't owe anything on it and, well, this means no more walking to work for my fiance this winter (not very fun or safe when its below freezing and blowing snow)! Sorry, I'm just really happy!!
  • Roz, congrats! that's a thrilling milestone. You're also being responsible by not financing the car. Many more milestones are in your future.
  • We paid SL#1 off in July, Care Credit Card off this month, and should have CC#4 paid off in Nov.  Now we just have SL#2 and Jeep, which is expected to be paid off in May 2014.
