Looking for a Cheap Flight

I want to go to South Bend, IN for my BFF's baby shower, but it's $$$ to fly to SB since it's a regional airport. I could fly to Chicago, then take the train to SB, but that seems like a hassle (plus cab fare to get to the train station...and what if my connector is late and I miss my train.) I'm not wanting to spend more than $450 (since I'm helping fund her shower) for a round trip ticket. Any ideas? I've looked at all the flight search websites, but they're all at least $470 right now. Anyone know the cheapest days of the week to buy? I want to leave on a Thursday and come back home on a Sunday. I've heard that Mondays and Fridays are the most expensive days to fly. Anyone know of any promos or special deals I could get?

BTW I completely missed out on United's $1 flights flub.

Re: Looking for a Cheap Flight

  • Does Spirit Airlines fly out of your airport?  Whenever I want a cheap flight I fly Spirit.
  • Have you tried booking through Orbitz or Travelocity, etc? I've noticed that it becomes cheaper if you book on Tuesday nights. I pretty much scoured all these sites for weeks before I booked my flight to Orlando. Also, if you have AAA, sometimes that can be cheaper too.

  • I subscribe to airfarewatchdog - it sends me deals every couple days via email for the best-priced flights from my city.  I also set up email alerts when I know I'm going to be traveling somewhere specific - it constantly scans prices and will alert me when my chosen route is particularly well-priced.

  • Will you have to rent a car once you get to your final destination? Depending on where in Indiana you are heading you may just be able to drive from Chicago (about 2 hrs) or Indy (about 2 hrs). Otherwise have you looking into flying into Ft Wayne? That is sometimes cheaper.

  • I'll look into flying into fort wayne or Indy. But no, I won't need to rent a car. All of the cheap flights are through Spririt.
