Literary Baby Names?

I have read a ton of lists online of baby names from books but they are always the same! Holden, Scout, Daisy, Jane, or Emma. I love names from classic books and childrens books but I was hoping to find some that are more off the grid. A book that wasn't read by every teenager or a childrens book that isn't Matilda or Eloise.

H and I really want a literary name and he keeps shooting my girls names down! We have already chosen a future boys name. Oscar. Oskar is the main character in Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close a book we both love and we were tipping our hats to that.

What are some of your favorite books or names from books? Inspire me!

Names H dislikes
Lucy-Chronicles of Narnia
Alice- Alice's Adventures in Wonderland
Hanna- The Reader
Wendy- Peter Pan
Cecilia- The Virgin Suicides
Jane or Adele- Jane Eyre

    Jo from Little Women?

This is hard. I always liked the name Rue from Hunger Games, but obviously that's going to be pretty well known. Who was the woman who got killed in Dracula, Mina? (She got killed, maybe not.)

    Daisy from Great Gatsby.
My favorite place on earth: The Amargosa Valley.

My new obsession is August, for a boy. It's from the book Wonder, which was so incredibly beautiful. I plan to read it to my future kids, and I could see naming a son August.

I love Primrose, from Hunger Game. Hermione, though I could never use it. Atticus, from To Kill a Mockingbird. Josephine from Little Women. Marlena from Water for Elephants. Harriet, Harriet the Spy. I always loved Fern from Charlotte's Web.

Edit: I super suck, because you clearly asked for girl names. Lol.

  • DH and I had a REALLY hard time agreeing on a name for dd2. I fell in love with the name Marlena while reading Water for Elephants but didn't share it with him until after the u/s. (No need for another argument if we were having a boy.) I was ready to fight for it (since he named dd1) but no need.. he loved it too!

From The 13th Tale, Adeline and Emmeline.

Emma has always been a favorite.
    Taya 9.20.05 * Marlena 10.4.07 * Armando 11.3.93
  • I love Matilda for a dog. One day I'll have a house with a yard and then I'll have a dog named Matilda. DH doesn't get a vote.

I'm no good at this. I doubt I'll ever be able to pick a name for any future children. I like James, but not because it's from HP, I just like it. I remember reading names like Cooper and Ben in books and liking those. And Ellie. But I don't remember the books. I'm mostly sure they were secondary characters.

  • I used James for DS's middle name. I wanted it for a first name, but got veto'd. It is from so many books, but I loved it because of Outlander.

I second Claire, if Alex had been a girl.....

I also Like Anne (Anne of Green Gables), Hazel (TFIOS), and Bella ( JK!!!!)

  • Love love the name  Claire, it's an all time favorite, also love Coraline.

After having DS#1, we had such a hard time getting Pregnant and had been trying for almost 2 years, while on vacation and awaiting an appointment to see an infertility doc, DS#1 touched my belly and said "baby sarah", mind you we had no idea we were pregnant, DH and I just laughed it off , but sure enough 2 weeks later we found out we were PG, which turned out to be a girl, so we named DD Sarah Elizabeth, not literary, but it fits her perfectly.
  • Claire is on our list as well (and my reasoning is Outlander, I love her character and what she is about). DH's favorite for a girl is Emma so far but he didn't veto Claire, and I'm not sure if Charlotte is anywhere but Charlotte's Web but that's also on our list =)

    I like Atticus, too.

I think Mina lives... doesn't she revert to normal after they kill Dracula? Her bestie, Lucy Westenra (or something like that), gets all vamped and they have to kill her I think.

I like Mina a lot.  It's short for Wilhelmina, which I think would be a nice way to honor a William in the family.  DH is not on board though, so if we use it, it will probably be just Mina.

Others I like: Penelope (The Odyssey), Rhiannon (Not On a White Horse), Meg/Margaret (Little Women and A Wrinkle in Time), Beth (Little Women), Una (Ahab's Wife), Liesel (The Book Thief), Jane (Jane Eyre), Ellis (for Ellis Bell, Emily Bronte's pseudonym), Portia (Julius Caesar), Cordelia (King Lear), Tamsin (by Peter S. Beagle, who wrote The Last Unicorn), Zora (Zora Neale Hurston)

That's right.  Mina reverts back to human when Dracula dies, but Lucy developed a vampiric predilection for children (not in that order).

H and I have found a name that wasn't suggested by anyone and he actually found himself. Annabel from the Poe poem Annabel Lee. We both have always enjoyed Poe but I always felt it was a little dark.

  • We have a Claire -- it's from a bunch of places.  From the movie the Breakfast Club, Outlander, and the Time Traveler's Wife, to name a few favorites.  It just kept popping up everywhere, and we knew that was her name.

  • Adara (the belgarion series) is a favorite name of my sis and I. I also really like Elizabeth- (pride and prejudice).
