Re: Tell me about Susanna Kearsley

  • Commenting so I'll remember to read the responses tomorrow. I've heard good things about her but never picked up one of her books.

  • I read Winter Sea and really liked it. Four or five star for me. It's set in/near Aberdeen Scotland! I'm fairly certain that it won't compare to Outlander but you'd get a little fix!

I'm currently reading The Rose Garden, set in Cornwall England. Not sure what will happen yet, seems to have mystical elements in several of her books.

Have you read Kate Morton? S. Kearsley's books remind me of Morton's writing style with more fantastical plots.

I think you will like her. I have read two of her books and they are an interesting blend of contemporary story and historical fiction.

ETA- Since you love Outlander I would start at the Winter Sea.
  • @fabk said it perfectly when she described them as a perfect blend of HF and CF.  Kearsley blends the two very well.

The Winter Sea is probably my favorite read of hers so far.

They're not sweeping, epic type books but they're gorgeously written. When I read one of her books, they tend to stay with me for a while afterward.

  • Another fan here- so far I've only read The Winter Sea, but I really enjoyed it.Such beautiful writing. I would also agree she's similar to Kate Morton. I've added her other books to my TBR.

  • I've read Winter Sea and Mariana, and enjoyed them both. Winter Sea was my favorite of the two. I'm currently reading Shadowy Horse and it's too soon to tell what I think.

Kate Morton is my favorite historical fiction author. If you like her, you'll probably like Susanna Kearsley.

  • another vote for The Winter Sea... and yes, it's the only one of hers I've read. Reminded me of Kate Morton and maybe Sara Donati
  • I've read The Shadowy Horses and I really enjoyed it. I have a few of her other books, just haven't picked them up yet.

I just added this one to my library holds!
  • I briefly started Shadowy Horses and I think I'll enjoy it but opted for Rose Garden first because some people have said they liked Shadowy more and I didn't want to "go backwards." :)

  • I love her so much.  My favorite is Mariana, but I've loved all of her books so far.  I think you'd like The Winter Sea and The Rose Garden, too. Well, really all of them, but I'd start with those.

Also, what @RevJen said.  Read The Shadowy Horses and The Winter Sea before reading The Firebird. They are stand alones, but it's so much richer knowing the history of the other two books first.
