DH and I are signing up for our hospital's classes today and there are a ridiculous amount covering all sorts of topics. What classes did you sign up for? Was there any class that you signed up for that was helpful but out of the norm?

We are signing up for the birthing class and the infant CPR, currently.

TIA!

ETA: We will not be BFing, if that helps. There's 6 separate classes available just based on BFing.

Re: Talk to me about classes

  • Aside from breastfeeding, we signed up for prepared childbirth, newborn care, and "baby and dog."  "Baby and dog" is probably a little out of the norm, but we have a very hyper lab, and we're hoping to get some good tips on how to introduce her to LO.

I separately signed us up for CPR, also, which we did last week. Definitely keep that one on your list - I feel so much safer having the infant and child CPR/choking techniques down.

Our hospital had a billion classes too, and I tried to keep it to those that I thought we would really use.

    Good luck!!

  • Ours was a birth/newborn care class that I actually found to be helpful. We also signed up for a relaxation class which taught different coping strategies/techniques since I went med free. I wanted to sign up for infant CPR but the schedule didn't work out.

  • We didn't end up taking any classes. I was put on modified bed rest the night before the class at 31 weeks because of contractions/preterm labor.

We signed up for the only class nearby and dit was at a different hospital. It was called childbirth prep and you could stay an hour later for the BFing portion if you were planning on BFing.

I may have tried to find more classes but I already had child/infant CPR and first aid as well as children's development classes from working in a daycare so that was very helpful.

  • All we did was the hospital tour and baby basics class, and the main reason we took that class was because DH has zero experience with babies and he wanted to get the basics. The last thing I wanted was for him to go in blind and feel like I was hovering over and teaching him every step of the way (not that I'm an expert, but I've had experience with babies). I wanted him to feel confident about being able to take care of his daughter and I think he feels that way now that he took the class.

  • We did the 12 week Bradley course, but we were planning a Bradley birth (med free).  I found it very helpful, and DH learned a lot.  I think it depends a lot on what kind of birth you want and how much time you are willing to invest.

  • We did a basic 4 week birthing class. I wish we had chosen a more unique class. I haven't learned anything I didn't already know, other than a few positions to try for comfort during labor, and those won't matter much if you're planning on an epidural. Definitely go for the unique classes IMO.
