Re: qod 9/24

  • I'm  named for my Grandmothers:  Leah was my mother's mother, my mother's middle name is Leah and Anna was paternal grandmother.

  • I was named after the song Melissa by the Allman Brothers, daddy and daughter dance at my wedding, which my dad yelled at me for picking because he couldn't hold in his emotions lol

  • My Mom thought Bethany sounded French and went well with my maiden name which is French, but it's Hebrew (it's actually a town in the Bible). It also doesn't do me much good now since my new last name is German! However, my older brother was going to be Melinda if he was a girl, and I'd rather be Bethany than Melinda!

  • My parents wanted to name a girl Cate - with a C, didn't like Catherine, and didn't like Caitiln, so I became Catelyn. No one ever spells it correctly though, and i've never me another Catelyn spelled like me. Leigh was pulled out of a hat, more specifically, dad met someone whose name was Leigh and he really liked it and if "flowed" well with the rest of my name. I don't think it sounds quite right now with my married name, but that's okay.

  • I was originally supposed to be a boy. My dad, James made a bet with his friend, Michael, whoever won got the baby named after him. His friend won. Then I was a girl. So my parents played with names and ended up with (first name) May (middle name) Lynn. After saying it a few times, they liked the way it sounded together so they changed the spelling and made it my name. Then they didn't want my middle name to be Michael so they played with that too and I ended up with Mailyn (May-Lynn) Mykelle (Mi-kel).

  • My mom told me Princess Leia is what inspired her to find and like Leah.

  • My mom wanted to use the name Katherine since before she had kids...and Rachel is my aunts name on my Dad's side.

I used to get so mad at them though because they exclusively called me Katie and I would get teased at school with my full name and had more then a few teachers who insisted on using my "proper name" and wouldn't call me Katie. I didn't even know how to spell Katherine until grade 6.

  • I was almost named Jennifer. I'm glad I wasn't. My patents just liked the name Melissa and didn't think it was popular. They were wrong. There several of us in my class in high school. My nickname is Mel and never liked being called Missy. But I'm tired of being called Mel.
  • After A song by Boston called Amanda.

  • I am named after one one of my cousins who is 10 years older than me. I have the same middle name as my mom.

  • My first name came from the movie Somewhere in Time. The lead female in the movie was Elise. My mom liked the spelling Elyse better because I had a y in my last name.

  • My dad had a friend growing up named Jamaal (ja-MEL) and liked the name, especially because it was derived from the Arabic Jameelah (jzha-MEE-lah) which means beautiful. My parents agreed on the name but spelled it "Jamelle" so it would be pronounced properly. But the Arabic speaking folk on my dad's side teased us because that is (jzha-MEE-lee) which is the Arabic word for Camel. Oops. So at 6 weeks my parents submitted a request for a name change for me to change the spelling to Jamael. Our Arabic relatives agreed this was a "beautiful" compromise! (Did you see what I did there?)

  • My didn't know if I was a boy or girl. If I was a boy I was going to be named Kyle and Amanda if I was a girl. Both names were just names my parents found in a baby book. While I was one of the first Amandas in my area about 6 other moms named their daughter Amanda.

I was always a little upset my parents didn't give me a name that meant something. My middle name is Elizabeth which is also another popular middle name of my birth year. I used to lie when I was younger telling people it was Ellen after my aunt. Now that H and I are talking about baby names (not pregnant or TTC yet...) we are realizing how some people might be upset to not have the baby named after them...
