stupid question of the day

so i'm sure there will be more of these, but how seriously do you take all the 'food rules' that come along with pregnancy.

I put feta on my salad everyday at lunch and I just realized maybe I shouldn't be eating feta anymore since its a soft cheese??

Re: stupid question of the day

  • edited September 2013

You can eat feta and other soft cheeses because they've been pasteurized.

I didn't follow any food rules aside from not having runny eggs, avoiding raw fish sushi, and not ordering my steak as bloody as I would normally like to.

I eat Jimmy Johns at least once a week and haven't avoided caffeine or soft serve ice cream.

ETA: I talked to my Dr's about the food rules and they didn't tell me to avoid anything, and the research I've done didn't show me anything that was concerning or occuring enough for me to cut things from my diet. Do what you feel comfortable with, though.

OK! this is what I was thinking. thank you.
  • My doctor gave me a list of things they say to avoid and meds that are "safe" to take and I just followed that.

I ate whatever I could keep down a lot of the time.

This is what I do. My doctors advice about lunch meat was that I shouldn't buy it from a vendor off the street lol. If it makes you feel better, you can get the sandwich toasted. The only thing I'm careful about is my in take of certain fish.

I still have a cup of coffee every morning and the occasional soda. My doctor told me that I could have 2.5 medium sized cups of coffee a day.
    (~200-250mg of caffeine daily)

  • I'm on the same page as Lizzie. I've avoided raw sushi and super undercooked meats but I've had a medium burger a time or two. I'm also thinking about Jimmy John's today in fact.

I just had an iced coffee for the first time since being pregnant the other day and when I drink soda I try to have Sprite Zero but I don't feel bad for having a diet coke or bleu cheese on my salads.

Yep! If the machines aren't cleaned properly, there could be a slight chance of listeria from that. For me, the chance of this happening isn't great enough for me to give up my occasional treat.

For real!  I wouldn't be giving up my ice cream because of an extremely slim chance!

  • I avoided the few things on my doc's list - hot dogs/lunch meat, soft cheeses, limited intake of certain fish, and alcohol. Really With the exception of alcohol i didn't eat much of that anyway so it was NBD. And while I know the chances of something bad happening are minuscule, they obviously have happened and cause enough concern for my doc to put them on a restricted list so I rather just follow them for the 9 months. But like others have said, basically it's a personal decision and you do what you're comfortable with.

  • I'm a vegetarian, but I avoided soft cheeses and made sure to wash fruit and veggies thoroughly. I also avoided sprouts and spinach completely and mostly chose not to eat soft serve. I also reduced my caffeine intake significantly and avoided alcohol. These diet changes weren't a big deal to me and were nothing compared to what I had to do early on while BF.

I could hold you for a million years
To make you feel my love.
  • I did what my doctor told me:
    - No caffeine 1st trimester but 1 small cup of coffee a day since 13 weeks
    - No cold cuts unless toasted/broiled
    - Soft cheese but only if pasteurized (so I won't eat feta, mozzarella, brie or blue cheese in a restaurant because I can't check but I buy in a supermarket)
    - Fish is fine other than those with high mercury (swordfish and tuna I think)
    - No sushi
    - I get my steak and burgers medium instead of medium rare
    - Obviously no alcohol (well I've had total probably 2 glasses of red wine in 26.5 weeks through sips of DH)

I think that's all.  I don't make myself crazy and if something slips in, I don't stress.  It's a personal choice and the chances of something bad happening are so miniscule.  But I am paranoid so I try to follow the "rules."

I do all this too. It really hasn't been that difficult for me. With my history I'm not taking any chances.

I took a lot of the warnings pretty seriously in my first pregnancy until about 3rd tri. This pregnancy, I will eat whatever I want in moderation.

ETA: except for sushi. No raw fish.

I totally forgot to even mention no alcohol. That one is a no brainer for me, so I didn't even think!

  • The only thing my doctor specifically mentioned that I should be careful of is Queso at some of the Mexican restaurants, because some of them use unpasteurized cheese. She told me lunch meat was fine, veggies (just wash well) and other soft cheese were fine as long as they were pasteurized. I think that if I followed all the lists I see online of what I'm not supposed to eat, I would be hungry a lot. If my doctor tells me something is a no-no that is one thing, but she didnt so I'm glad.

Can we talk more about caffeine?

I stopped drinking coffee (I was up to 1 cup in the morning and a large iced coffee in the afternoon by the end of the summer) once I got my BFP. When I told my OB at my 10w appt that the constipation was baaaaaad and that prunes, chia, and a stool softener (in addition to eating other high-fiber foods) weren't really helping much, he told me that if I drank coffee before, it's okay to have one cup of coffee a day through the pregnancy.

He didn't say anything about during/after 1st tri. I've only done this for a few days now (constipation waaaay better), but now I'm concerned that I shouldn't be doing this until the end of 1st Tri.

    Thoughts?
Both my doctors (I changed dr half way through due to a move) said 250mg a day is fine. Neither specified anything about any trimester. If the doctor told you coffee was ok then it's fine.
