Stool Softener

Who's the pharmacist who had a recommendation for stool softener?  I've been pretty good all along, but now that I am anemic and have to take double iron pills, I need some help!

Thanks!

Re: Stool Softener

  • I'm a pharmacist. Colace is purely a stool softener--it doesn't really "make" you go, just makes it easier to go. If that's all you need, try Colace. I recommended Miralax to someone here b/c it both softens the stool and actually makes you go too. Usually iron will slow GI motility so people need help with both aspects.

My last b/w showed my iron was on the low side and they are going to check me again next week. I'm afraid I might be joining you with the iron supplements. Blech.

  • Thanks! I thought it was you but wasn't sure.

I was borderline anemic at 8 weeks but started taking supplements at 20 weeks. I had no issue with that. But after my BW last week, doc told me I had to take double. Definitely had GI issues since then!

  • I took some during 1st tri when it got bad. I took the genetic/no name equivalent to Colace.

  • Spin recommended the Miralax to me.  It didn't really do much for me except make my stomach really rumble-y and it made me gassy.  My OB recommended Colace and Peri-Colace to me.  The Peri-Colace is a softener AND a slight laxative.  It actually says on the bottle it should "produce a bowel movement in 6-12 hours".  It wasn't that immediate for me, but it got things moving along better than anything else.

Aw, I'm sorry the Miralax may have made things worse for you! :(
