serger vs. sewing machine
I'm fairly novice to sewing & own just a plain sewing machine. I found a fairly simple pattern for toddler shorts that I want to attempt. Do you think I need a serger? Does that make things easier? I've heard they aren't for beginners, but the basic serger stitch seems like it makes sense to bind the seams.
Re: serger vs. sewing machine
You do not need a serger. They can be nice to have, but you don't NEED one. In my 25+ years of sewing, quilting, and crafting, I can only think of one time that I really needed a serger for a project. (The project was a lycra dance costume with a lettuce edge skirt. Lettuce edge would have been fairly difficult on a regular machine.)
People made clothes for hundreds of years without sergers.
Zig-zagging the edges works just fine. You could also get some pinking shears. I have vintage homemade shirts that are 40+ years old that were finished with pinking shears. They're still going strong.
Wait to invest in a serger.
As a novice, take some time to figure out what kind of a sewist you are before buying machines.
I have regular sewing machines, an embroidery machine, and a serger. My serger is my least expensive machine and I don't use it much. I have sewing friends that use theirs all the time so have more powereful machines.
Sergers are great for sewing knits. They stitch and finish seams well. I've also used mine for pillowcases for a childrens hospital. But you can sew knits with a regular machine. Gosh, for me, I would rather have my embroidery machine than a serger.
Have fun sewing!
