QOTD 9/25

Are you going to be affected by Obamacare?

Bonus:  Did I use "affected" correctly?  Feel free to call me out if I didn't.  :)

Re: QOTD 9/25

  • I think that's right!

I shouldn't be affected, unless they jack our premium up.  I was hoping it'll help my mom get insurance (she can't get her own until she's been cancer free for 12 years, we're on year 7).

My BC was free starting this year, and of course now I get off it.

  • I am not affected by Obamacare. My employer pays my premiums for medical and dental and we were informed yesterday that nothing would change with our plans.

  • Our dental and medical plan won't change either.  The company pays 100% of it since we are all owners.

  • I work in Medical Billing.  Obamacare changes my job a lot!
  • It doesn't really affect me. Since I'm still a graduate student, my health insurance is 100% covered by my stipend. It's pretty crappy insurance, but it's free and it's enough for me. It is nice that there's no co-pay for birth control...before, it was $10 a month through the university health center.

Overall, I'm happy that women can't be charged a higher premium just because we're a woman. It's also a wonderful thing that you can't be denied coverage based on pre-existing conditions nor is there a lifetime cap on benefits. That was always one of my biggest fears. I don't have any pre-existing conditions, but the what if always terrified me. I've read stories of people going bankrupt because they had a serious illness and were either denied coverage or has met their cap.

  • It shouldn't. My insurance is paid for my insurance premiums.

I think it should be effected....but I'm an engineer, not a lit. expert so don't quote me! This question is a cause and effect, so that I why I think it's effected. Please one of the teachers teach us!! :)

  • The only thing Obamacare is affecting in my household is H's work schedule. His company is developing software and web applications for New York's new HIXNY program, so he's stuck working crazy hours to get everything ready by the go-live date.

  • As far as I know nothing is going to change for us.  We have not gotten our notice with what our new premiums are going to be yet.  I am hoping its not a huge jump.

  • It most affects me because I am the in-house attorney for a legal publishing co.--I've spent the better part of this summer drafting products that explain the Act to employers, producers, insurance agencies, etc etc etc.  Spoiler alert:  no one really knows what exactly is going to happen.  There are tons of moving pieces and, frankly, only time will tell.

Looks like affected is a verb, effect is a noun.  So is ObamaCare going to affect you?  vs How will you feel the effects of ObamaCare?

  • It won't affect me as I have insurance through my employer. H won't be affected either since he's on my plan.
My bro will since he just aged off my mom's plan this month and will be without insurance for the first time.

  • I'm not sure.  My employer pays my insurance and H is on my plan.  I work for my city and I'm under their plan.  I know my city is self-insured, but I really have no idea what that means, especially since I have a major insurance company.  I will be pretty upset if my copay goes up because I already feel I pay too much.

I hope my school district informs us soon!
  • As far as I know, no, but I don't think so. They sent us something saying that our benefits weren't changing, but they had to put it in a specific format. I know a lot of people are up in arms about it, but my parents are self-employed and have pre-existing conditions, so it's a big relief for them. They currently pay 2,300 a month as a premium to have 5,000 or 10,000 deductibles (I don't remember). So I'm really hoping it helps them out.

  • As for affect vs effect...

     When Should You Use Affect?

Affect with an a means "to influence," as in, "The arrows affected Aardvark," or "The rain affected Amy's hairdo." Affect can also mean, roughly, "to act in a way that you don't feel," as in, "She affected an air of superiority."

    When Should You Use Effect?

Effect with an e has a lot of subtle meanings as a noun, but to me the meaning "a result" seems to be at the core of all the definitions. For example, you can say, "The effect was eye-popping," or "The sound effects were amazing," or "The rain had no effect on Amy's hairdo."
