Spinning?

Has anyone ever taken a spinning class or tried creating a spinning workout on your own?

I've been doing a lot of research on creating my own spinning workout. My go-to workout is usually just taking a walk but that gets boring after a while. My parents are supposed to bring my stationary bike up at some point so I thought maybe I could create a really cool workout that I can do all year round in my own home! I checked at our local gym and they don't offer spinning class or anything like that. I know as a total beginner that I won't start out with a long workout...maybe 15 or 20 minutes for a few days/weeks until my muscles get used to moving again. I'm sure that I will be really sore the first few days too.

I'd love to make bike riding a new hobby of sorts. We have an awesome bike trail in my area that I would really enjoy using in the summer!

Any tips or advice?

I think bike rides and spinning classes are actually very different.

I took the classes for several years and loved them. It's fast paced and fun if the music is good.

Eta- in the beginning, have padded bike shorts. Trust me.

  • I love spinning, but unfortunately they don't offer classes around me.

Definitely ditto ILRV's advise on the bike shorts. They will save your arse.

Just Google spinning intervals, and see what you find. The best ones have you stand up and down during cycling, which helps move different parts of the muscles and keeps from your butt hurting.  Also, some good music makes a big difference too.

I used to take spinning classes at the gym.  I would def go with above PP's recommendation for a padded ass in some form.  I got a gel overlay for the seat as opposed to padded shorts. We promise if you don't, you WILL suffer. (esp adding ttc on top of all that pain). The best part of a spinning workout for me is standing while pedaling.  So like "one minute up, one minute down" etc. It's a really good workout. But you can't just sit there. Another friend of mine uses arm weights as well for her "sit down" portions. Hope this helps ;-)

  • I have been spinning since 2008 and while I love the classes, I loath stationary bikes. They are really not the same piece of equipment as a spin bike. You may be better off getting a stand for your road bike that allows you to train indoors over the winter if your goal is to ride outside. I totally agree that music makes all the difference! GL!
