Am I being a prude?

Brinley keeps asking for Monster High dolls.  I don't think they're appropriate.  Today she came home from preschool and it was someone's birthday, so she brought in cupcakes.  Monster high cupcakes.  Of course this spurs another session of Brinley asking for them.  I told her that they are inappropriate and meant for girls who are in junior high, not preschool.

What are your thoughts on the dolls?  And some of the others that seem overly mature.

Re: Am I being a prude?

  • I'm not too familiar with them, other than seeing them in the stores.  I don't like them.  It doesn't look like something a little girl should be playing with.  Are they like monster bratz dolls?  But then again, I am probably kind of a prude when it comes to keeping my little kids sweet and innocent as long as possible.  I just feel like kids grow up so fast and thing are being pushed much sooner now (make-up, crazy looking dolls).  There are so many other more age appropriate (and cute) doll options out there.

  • I never heard of them but just looked them up and I agree with you.  My daughter's in preschool and I wouldn't want her to play with them either.  I also have a pet peeve about parents bringing in cupcakes and candy for birthday parties at school but that's a topic for a whole other thread.
  • i let EJ buy herself one this past summer with money she saved. so she was 5.5. it was a reluctant decision.  in all honesty she like never plays with it anymore. I don't think it makes you a prude though. I am not a fan either.
  • There was a big discussion about these on another board I belong to. It was over the books, which she hates but she raved about the movies because they talk about accepting others for who they are and not what they look like. That being said, her kid was 6. If you don't think its appropriate, then there is nothing wrong with that. Your kid, your rules.

I looked into the shows (I didn't actually watch them) but most said that the level of meanness in them wasn't counter acted by the 30 lesson that is presented at the end,  I know it's  my kid, my rules--thank goodness!

I feel like people went all up in arms over Barbie Dolls for awhile, and I played with them non-stop when I was a kid (and DD plays with them now) and I turned out alright :-)

  • DD was really into them last year (at 5). I agree that the messages about acceptance in the shows were sort of uplifting, even if their outfits tend to be outrageous. Then again, as was mentioned, Barbie clothes are also sluttier than they were when we were kids.
  • I don't think they're appropriate either. DD isn't really aware of them, but even if she was - we wouldn't be buying them.

  • I saw a girl about 8 years old picking one out for herself the other day at Kohls.  So maybe 4 year olds are not the target market?
