First Ultra Sound today...

Today was my first ultra sound. I am 6 weeks exactly today. He said he saw a sac and yolk sac. We did not see a heartbeat yet. RE reassured  me that he thinks everything is fine.  He said there is definitely a pregnancy in the uterus. He wants me to go back on Wednesday and he says he suspects he will see a heartbeat then. He said because of my belly fat it might take a little longer to see things. :-/

  • Sounds good. I'm also surprised they wouldn't do a transvaginal u/s at this point and amazed they could see anything with the normal U/S.

  • I'm with bobcee, was this not a transvaginal ultrasound?  I went at 6 weeks this time, had an internal ultrasound and with some squinting Dr. and DH said they saw a heartbeat.  I didn't see it.  Went back a week later and it was clear as day.

  • Yeah I had transvaginal ultrasounds until my 20 wk u/s because that's how they said they could see better. I'm sorry your doctor made that comment. It was unnecessary and unrelated IMO.

Glad you have a healthy baby in there though! :)

  • Wait, this was an abdominal ultrasound at 6 weeks? Yeah, you'd have a hard time seeing much that way, "belly fat" or not, so the fact they were able to see a gestational sac, yolk sac, and fetal pole without a t/v u/s is a great sign!

  • It WAS a t/v u/s.  He had me press down on right above my pubic bone. He said with the belly fat it makes it diffucult for things to travel and its harder to see things so it may take longer. ??????? i mean i know I'm overweight but I never thought it would hinder ultrasounds....

  • I'm not sure then, seeing it was transvaginal, seems like an uncalled for statement to make still. I've never heard of weight affecting ultrasounds. I'm sorry you had to deal with that. :(

  • Your doctor isn't nuts. It's science and technology. Ultrasounds use soundwaves to transmit image. More body fat, longer distance sound waves have to travel, more inference, poor resolution. Science. Science. Science.
  • Yes, because visceral body fat isn't a thing. Clearly, body fat only exists within the epidermis. Also, sound waves move in one direct line FROM AND BACK TO THE PROBE, no matter what. Ever. The transvaginal wand has magical powers that hypnotize the sound waves to make them defy logic. Additionally, I had no idea what a transvaginal ultrasound was, so your lesson was helpful. I am certain the person with a great deal more schooling and knowledge than you is nuts and isnt aware of your enlightening information. Perhaps you should inform them.
  • Okay @panderp, I'm sorry but you coming over here to blow a post out of proportion is not cool, nor does it make jnadoreshn feel any better Im sure. Obviously we were unaware of why body fat would have anything to do with it, so I (sincerely) appreciate the clarification, but your approach was a little too aggressive.

@jadoreshn I hope you were able to take the information panderp was giving in a positive way. At least now you have the facts, but I still think it was unnecessary for your doctor to bring it up since they were able to see your healthy baby just fine. I hope your next ultrasound shows a strong heartbeat and results in a less (negatively) emotional visit.

  • LOL. My approach of explaining the technology was upsetting but calling her doctor crazy isn't? Noted.

    Also, vaganus.
  • Whoa! When has it ever been a bad thing for a doctor to be honest with their patients? You guys seem to be making a bigger deal over this weight comment than JN. Panda was explaining why he may have said that. Saying a doctor is nuts because of a comment on weight isn't right. This is why doctors are afraid to be upfront with their patients because the world is too PC and no one can hurt anyone's feelings or they are going to be sued. It is a doctors job to inform their patients about what is going on. He probably sensed JN getting anxious about how long the results were taking which is why he made the comment. Would it have been better if he had been in there with the dildo cam up there for a long while making her freak out that there was something wrong? Does it suck to be called out for being overweight, yes it does. I know I live there, but the fact is sometimes my weight and body fat can make certain things harder for medical professionals. You know who I am pissed at about that? Myself.
  • I guess I am just confused as to where he lacked bedside manner. Granted, I wasn't there so I don't know how the subject was approached. Weight is always a sensitive issue, and people get emotional surrounding it. I am sure his intent was not to make her feel badly.
  • Hey ladies. I got called into work so wasn't able to come back and check things out. I'm fine about it. That's @panda for helpin me understand the logic more.

He said he's sure everything is fine and that it sometimes takes longer to see things when there is extra fat. It's no secret in over weight. As long as at some point we are able to see that this little one is growing and doing they need I do is all I'm truly concerned about.

Am I disappointed that we didn't see a hb? Absolutely. But I know it's still early.

Do I wish I didn't have this extra weight? Absolutely. But I did lose a significant amount and RE has been very satisfied with the loss or else he wouldn't have let us move forward to IUI. He had no hesitation like he had in the past. Other than my weight in healthy and I'm doing the best I can at being as healthy as I can.

Sorry if people were upset by this tread. I'm sure it wasn't anyone's intention. My panties aren't in a bunch. I'm lookin forward to the next ultra sound.

    :-)

I think we can all agree that using a little bit of bedside manner goes a long way.

    Doctor? Or panda?
Because if you mean doctor, "belly fat" is a common lay men's term for visceral fat. Visceral fat is the fat that all of us have that lie around our organs within the abdominal cavity . This would certainly block sound waves even with TV U/s. It is not poor bedside manner, it's what it's called.
If you mean panda, that's just how she rolls. And she's not at your bedside....that I know of...I'm sure it didn't offend op to learn science :)

Hope my replay of what the derp said helps you to actually understand belly fat . And that just because you didn't know it was a thing, doesn't make it not a thing.

  • @jnadore - I had transvaginals at my 7w, 9w, and 12w U/S.  I'm overweight too and it allowed them to get a clearer picture.  At the 9w, you couldn't see anything but a clearish looking blob when they tried to do the abdominal.  I had a 13w U/S (at my practice, you get an U/S at every appt), and for the first time they felt they got a clear enough picture on an abdominal.  HTH!
