Gym or Stay at home...

DH and I have been contemplating joining a gym for 6 months and then once we're back in shape, just going for jogs and such up the road (mountains make great inclines lol).

Which do you think is a better idea:
the gym
or
your home

why?

(((sorry for the posts...i'll stop now lol)))

Re: Gym or Stay at home...

  • I'm a member of a gym and I think it's so much better because of all the machines they have and they also provide many classes.

  • I think the gym is better, because I don't like running outside in the colder months or the extremely hot months.  I agree with Jewelz about the machines and classes.  The other people at thy gym motivate me as well to run a little longer or a little faster.
  • I think it's personal and depends on what you are more likely to use.  I really liked going to a gym but when I started having longer days, it became more difficult to get there.  Now I am more likely to work out on my elliptical at home.  The gym definitely did have the advantage of weight machines that I miss, but home also is nice because my elliptical is always available and ready to use.

  • I used to belong to the Y and I loved it. I really did feel more motivated having all the other people there, and all the machines were great. I ended up giving up my membership when I moved in with DH because his house was all the way accross town.

I now work out at home and its really working for me. I use Exercise TV through Comcast OnDemand. I'm a big fan of anything Biggest Loser or Jillian Michaels. I get up and do one before work everyday, which works well for my schedule and I've been sticking with it. Its so easy to have it right there at the house.

  • I LOVE the gym for the variety and classes offered, but for me, the distance and my long workdays and other activities make regular gym attendance impossible.  OK, probably not impossible, but really, really unlikely.

So I've started working out again at home.  Videos, walks, hand weights.  Not as many options, but it's sooo much easier for me to come home after work, pop a video in at my leisure, grab dinner then shower, as compared to trying to accommodate the gym's schedule, changing at work, driving to the gym, then driving home an hour or so later.

And as for working out at the gym in the morning before work, yeah right.  That would require me protecting and storing my pressed work clothes at the gym, then trying to do my hair/make-up routine in a strange locker room.  And I'd have smelly clothes rotting away in my office all day.  No thanks.

For now, home is the only answer for me.

  • I should preface my answer by saying I am a trainer and certified classical Pilates instructor so my answers could be biased :)

I say the gym.  For almost everyone the cost of the gym membership is alot cheaper than the expense of buying your own equipment especially considering that most good equipment is not budget friendly.  I've met more than my share of people who shell out thousands of dollars for a treadmill only to find that they use it more store books or hold clothes than they actually walk or run on it.  Yes there are a lot of great home options out there that are more budget friendly (free weights, dumbbells, resistance bands, medicine and stability balls, etc) but I think a good chunk of people are more likely to make themselves go when they know its costing them money.  Plus the variety available at a gym vs home can be beat.

That being said...I love my facility and all the options available to me there but I have a commercial grade treadmill, bike, and some other small stuff at home because after being there 9+ hrs a day I need out.  Plus I've found over the years that even if I have my Ipod on someone recognizes me and is either interupting my workout because they have a question or because something isn't working right and they want me to fix it OR on the flip side they will get on the ARC, tread, etc next to me and constantly watch what I'm doing to "compete" with the trainer.  I do some Pilates Reformer training at my facility though because its in a private room :)

  • For me personally I prefer exercising at home. I just feel very self concious in a gym.  I also like the convenience of pulling out a video and exercising.

However, the gym does have benefits such as people there who can tell you when you are doing it wrong.

  • I go to a gym and that is what I would recommend. I used to do a home program but it is too easy to flake out on it and say "nah, I'm not going to exercise today". Going to a gym forces you to get it into a routine. Plus I love being there! I have a great feeling when I am leaving after a great workout, and that is my "me" time. I also feel motivated by other people there, so that helps a lot.

If you don't want to spend a lot you could always get a membership at Planet Fitness. If you get the membership that is $20 a month, there is no fees to join and you would only be paying for one membership because you could bring a guest whenever you wanted... so you could join and bring your DH every time you go. They don't have classes though, so that is one difference of a bigger gym.  They are open 24 hours M-F so you wouldn't have to work around their schedule, and 7-7 on Saturdays and Sundays.

Also... please don't stop posting! It is nice to see posts on this board! :)

  • I think it depends on your schedule. There have been periods in my life where I have loved going to the gym and have been very dedicated. However, in the last few years I have found that I hate being away from home. I do much better when I work out at home...either going for a walk/run or doing a work out tape. For me, spending three evenings a week in the gym was too much. I started out taking maternity excercise classes and stopped because I wasn't spending enough time with DH.

I would do what works for you and DH!

  • I also agree with a gym vs. home equipment, although I wish I could actaully do it. DH and I used to religously go to the gym 3x a week at least and loved it--the motivation, time together, routine etc. While I've never had home equipment, I don't think I'd feel as motivated or have as many options to mix things up.

Unfortunately, right now the closest gym is about 15-20 minutes away, and DH and I travel opposite directions from the house for work and would want to go to the gym together. We'd also be away from the house for about 11 hours a day plus at the least, which is too long with our dog. We're really hoping to find a way to get back in to the routine...but until then we walk and run at home.

  • I prefer having a gym membership -- when the weather is bad (what, 9 months out of the year here in PA?!) I can still exercise, and I'm also an avid believer in balancing cardio and weight training.

My gym membership is more effective than me trying to buy all of the different items I use for weight training...especially since the amount of weight I lift is always changing.

Just depends on your style I guess!
