WTF is this and why didn't my Dr. discuss it with me?

When I had my HSG, the Dr. who performed it just told me the fluid spilled out and my tubes are clear. The hospital I use has a "my health" site where you can login and email your nurse and view your history, including lab reports. I hadn't heard anything from my RE concerning the HSG, so I figured it was normal. I was bored this morning so I went to the site just to look at previous labs, and I read the HSG report. This is taken from it: There is some indentation of the fundal portion suggesting an arcuate variant. I googled it, which was probably a mistake. I says that it's not likely to cause trouble getting pregnant, but can affect carrying a baby to term. Now my problem is why didn't my RE discuss this with me? Is it not a big deal? To me it seems like it is, but I'm likely to overreact. Would you be upset if your Dr. didn't discuss it with you, even if it was nothing to worry about?

Re: WTF is this and why didn't my Dr. discuss it with me?

  • Do you have a follow up appointment scheduled with your RE? Maybe the plan was for you to discuss it in person then.

  • No, he didn't ask me to come in for one.
  • Then I agree with LL, call him to talk to him about it.

  • I just sent the nurse an email asking about it. It usually takes a day or two for them to respond. If I haven't heard back from them by about mid-day Tuesday I'm going to call them.
  • Yes, I would definitely call your RE and ask about this.
  • I would be calling by Monday at 4 for an answer. I hope they call you before you call them!

  • I hope they get back to you before Tuesday. I agree with poppies, call Monday if you don't hear back. I would definitely be annoyed that my doctor didn't discuss something with me even if the chances of it being an issue were minimal. It's your body, you deserve to know the full results of the test.

  • I would definitely call. So many times the doctors say its NBD but google will say different, probably depends on each case. I hope that no news is good news and the doctor can confirm ASAP.

  • My RE has me schedule a consult to go over any testing results like that. I waited until I went through all the preliminary testing and then had the consult. Maybe your doctor has a similar policy?

FWIW, I have an arcuate uterus and my RE said that it's so small it wouldn't cause any problems.
  • I would be annoyed that I wasn't called. IMO a doctor should call you with result no matter what. I would call the doctor and ask for an explanation.

  • I would want my doctor to explain that to me also. It sounds like he's not concerned about it being an issue since he said things look normal, but I still would've wanted to hear what it was and whether or not he thought it would affect TTC and/or pregnancy. That way you wouldn't have felt the need to resort to Dr Google when you saw the report.

I hope you get an email back soon. If not, I agree with the others and would say call tomorrow. FX it really is NBD!

Yes, I want to know ALL. Even if I wouldn't understand 100% percent of the technical stuff, as a doctor it's his responsibility to inform you of all findings during any procedure. Not just if HE feels they're relevant or if you'll understand. What if you ever had to see a different re and they asked you if all your tests came bak normal and you said "yes"? That would be inaccurate and may slow proper tx (if any). Phew. *steps off soap box* GL!

  • Mae, thanks for sharing that with me. I was wondering if anyone else here had one but didn't want to ask. I'm hoping that's the case with mine, that it will be small and won't affect anything.
Thanks everyone for responding. I'm going to call tomorrow evening if I haven't received an email by then. Like some of you have said, I want to know all of it, not just what the Dr. thinks is important to explain to me.
  • I would definetly be annoyed and ask for a follow immediately.
