At what point would you switch your dog to senior dog food? Is it necessary and what is different in adult vs senior formulas?

Typically a senior diet is lower in calories but that is the only relatively consistent aspect of a senior formula. So if your dog is suddenly gaining weight on a diet he has had for a while than it *may* benefit to transition to a senior diet. If he isn't I wouldn't worry about it.
I don't believe any senior diet on the market has the right formlation, or high enough levels of glucosamine to be of value from that aspect. If you want to protect joints in an aging dog look into cosequin
