Will I Lose Weight After Nuvaring?

Hi, I am 5'1 and weighed 115 lb prior to starting the Nuva Ring. Within 4 months I have gained 25 lbs! I am super bloated, moody/sluggish and my sex drive has gone way down. (The weight gain may also be due to tapering off and finally going completely off 300mg of Wellbutrin, but I have a feeling it has more to do with the Nuva Ring.)

My main concern is the weight gain and my question is, if I go off it will I easily lose the weight? I know every body is different, but in general does going off make it easy to lose this weight?

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!

Re: Will I Lose Weight After Nuvaring?

  • I'm so sorry to hear about your bad experience! Did you lose weight when you went on Wellbutrin? If so, it could partly be that weight returning. Depending on how long ago you got totally off the Wellbutrin, the moodiness, sluggishness, and lack of sex drive could all be related to that as well. (I've been there--it sucks. I actually had to go back on.)
You should talk to your doctor about the weight and feelings. He/she should be able to get an idea of where they're coming from. You may be super sensitive to hormones like I am. I used the NuvaRing for a few years and liked it, but I did lose a bit of weight when I switched from it to Mirena (still has hormones, but a very low amount). Good luck to you, and hang in there.

  • Thank you so much for your feedback!

I did lose weight on Wellbutrin, around 15 pounds, which I now gained back with an additional 10. I have been off of Wellbutrin for 3 weeks and I am going to go back on once it's been a month (per my dr). Did you lose weight on the 2nd time around on Wellbutrin?
  • I would talk to your doctor. When I was on the Nuvaring, I felt fine, but after a few months I became extremely irritable. I didn't notice any significant weight gain with it though.
Your best bet would be to talk with your doctor.
  • I wasn't off Wellbutrin long enough to notice a weight change. I gained a lot of weight while trying to figure out my meds, which took nearly a year. The combo of weight gain and meds frustration led me to trying to stop them cold turkey (i.e., the very thing you're told not to do), but that only lasted until the lack made me more miserable than being on them.
With the changes you're making, it may take some time for your body to equalize. Hope you're doing well.

  • I actually gained a couple of pounds when I went off the Ring.

  • I was on NuvaRing for over 5 years and had nothing but great results. Lost a couple pounds, periods got lighter, no cramps, no mood swings, no sex drive issues. I recommend it to all my friends. Could be the other meds you were taking, and also it takes a while for your body to adjust to anything new--so give it a few months before you write it off. Good luck!
  • Just wondering are you moody/sluggish, bloated, etc all the time or only certain times in the cycle.  I found that when I went off the Nuva ring for the week I would get horrible Migraine like headaches, bloated, very moody etc.  My OBGYN pointed out that some people are more senstive to the hormone shift.  She recommened that I leave the ring in for 4 weeks and then immeadiately replace it with a new ring only taking a ring out for a week once every 3 months.  Doing this has gotten rid of pretty much all my symptoms.  (Discuss this with your doctor first!)

Good luck, I hope you figure something out.
