Halloween questions

How soon will you all start decorating?  Does anyone else get really into Halloween and have fun decoration ideas?

I wanted to start decorating last night but DH thought it was too early.  He thinks we should wait another week.  I agree to wait a week or so to carve pumpkins, but I want to do the rest of it now!!  I just LOVE Halloween so much I can't wait to do all my crafts and decorations!  I got a grave yard this year and am just dying to put it in the front yard...

Re: Halloween questions

  • I already outed myself a few weeks ago as a Halloween freak, so I put up my decorations on September 15th (I know...)  A little background into this:

As I mentioned earlier, I grew up in the country, my parent's house is in the woods of Indiana and it's super spooky this time of year.  We used to throw HUGE family Halloween parties and make our own haunted trails, my uncles would drive all the kids on tractor rides and the older relatives would jump out of the trails and scare us, we had bonfires, we'd decorate this huge pole barn, bobbing for apples, the whole nine yards.  They are some of my favorite memories and that is why I am so into Halloween.

I am going to make a DIY door wreath this year.  I am getting really into vintage Halloween decorations.  I love that old witch/owl/black cat cartoon stuff.  Reminds me of the Peanuts Halloween and a time when it was more innocent/spooky and less gory and disturbing.

Here are some really cute wreath ideas if you're into crafts http://lilluna.com/25-halloween-wreaths/

I'm thinking we might go as scarecrows this year, but still haven't quite decided.

Thanks for the Halloween thread, I truly love any excuse to talk about this holiday, lol.

  • Halloween is not my thing. We have a fall wreath on our front door, and that is about the extent I am willing to go. We may put pumpkins on our front porch, but will probably not be carving them.

  • We've had our Fall and Halloween decorations up since the first day of Fall. Our neighbors did theirs last weekend. I think, once Fall hits, Halloween decorations are fair game!

  • Should save this for confessions day, but I'll go ahead and confess now... I hate Halloween.  I think it's a combination of being an arachnophobic to an extreme.  I understand it is irrational and thoughts alone should not cause panic attacks and hives, but I can't help it.  My birthday is also the day after Halloween.  Growing up, I think every parent other than my own thought I should always have Halloween themed parties.  Maybe that has something to do with it, too.  I do love fall though (football and cooler weather...woohoo!)  I think October 1 is completely acceptable for fall/Halloween decorations!  For those Halloween lovers though... please keep the creepy crawlies to a minimum :)  Everything else fair game!  LOL.

  • @MrsH1027 I get panic attacks too, I feel your pain!  ;)  (And I hate spiders--NO spider decorations allowed.)

  • I absolutely LOVE Halloween.  A few years ago, my parents and I started throwing annual Halloween parties.  The first year, we went all out and turned the garage into a haunted house with separate rooms with different themes, like a witch room, a morgue, a Frankenstein room and I can't remember the others.  The kids loved it though!

We didn't get to do one last year since our wedding took up all of our free time in October.  This years will actually be the day before our anniversary so it will be a a little extra celebration for us.  We're planning on going over to my parents this weekend to get the decorating done.  We have a lot of decorations for outside and inside so it will probably take both days to get it all done.

H is going as a Bavarian Beer Drinking guy and I'm either going to be Jasmine or a vampire.  I have a Jasmine costume that I bought a few years ago, but never wore and I just bought the vampire one.  My oldest step daughter is going as Cleopatra and my youngest is going as Strawberry Shortcake.

  • I would say its fine to start decorating now. I think that we will just put some pumpkins outside and that will be it. DH does not like Halloween. He does like fall though because of all the owl decor. I really want get a giant spider for the lawn but DH says no. :(

I'd love to do all of this but there is no way this year.  I'm just so excited to actually decorate our house and be home for Halloween.  Our wedding was 10/27 last year so we were too busy with wedding stuff to even consider decorating.  We were in Jamaica for all the trick-or-treaters but our house sitter said we had a TON of them, with an undecorated house.

I'm totally going to start my projects and decorating tonight!!!  I'm so excited!!!

We have no idea what we are going to do for costumes this year.  We want to be creative and were almost thinking of going at Dexter and a victim but I don't want to have to mess with plastic wrap all night.  (I'd wear a body suit under it.)  So back to the drawing board!

  • Halloween decorating is so much fun!  There is so much you can do with variety.  I do enjoy pumpkins and carving them :)

We don't decorate for anything.  We live at the bottom of the driveway and no one would see it.  This fall in particular, I have seen so many great idea for decorating when we finally get a house.  I think I am going to start taking pictures so I don't forget.

I think October 1st or the closest weekend to it is a good time to begin decorating.  If you decorate for fall, not Halloween, I'd say September 15 is a good time to decorate.
