Debt Consolidation Program

Has anyone every had any good experience with a debt consolidation programs?

Re: Debt Consolidation Program

  • no- and they are not good. you are better off working it out on your own and dealing with your lenders on your own. They supposedly have very high fees to work with your lenders for you.

  • I know someone who used a debt consolidation program in the past, and I remember her saying it was costing her more in the end because of the monthly fee she was paying for the program.   As mentioned above, you are better off working it out on your own.
  • NFCC and CCCS are the only two agencies that are reliable and recommended by Suzy Orman.

I've been working with CCCS and I pay $45 in fees but like a PP mentioned my interest rates are significantly lower, one is even at 0%.  Most credit card companies will work with you but it's after you aren't able to make payments or have a history of being late.  They wouldn't work with me so this helps lower my interest rate and gives me a chance to pay more towards principal.

  • I've found that once you work out payment plans with companies they will stop charging you intersted & sometimes will work with you on interest rates & previous interest/fee charges
  • I actually used a credit counseling service once and they were reliable for me and I am forever grateful that they were able to help me get out of debt. The good thing about the company that I used was that it did not affect my credit at all negatively, but I realize that everyone's situation is different. My credit was never 'bad' to begin with - I just had a mountain of debt!

FWIW, I did try to contact my creditors on my own to sort things out with them directly and only sought the credit counseling company's help as the last resort, but they all refused because as someone just stated, some of them won't budge unless you are consistently late/not paying, which wasn't the case for me. But, at the same time, my creditors jacked up my interest rates and I was only able to afford the minimum payments, which was just the interest and not the principle. A hard money lesson learned for me - luckily it was before I was even thinking about marriage, so I was able to get out relatively quickly through the consolidated company at minimal cost to them. I made sure I was completely free and clear of debt prior to marriage because I didn't want that hanging over my head. My wedding was paid for entirely in cash too - and I didn't feel I had to sacrifice at all to have the wedding that I wanted. I feel like I've come such a long way just in the last 5-6 years after all of this. It's truly a great feeling to be completely debt free, with the exception of my mortgage, and have money in the bank.

Taking the first step to getting out of debt - it can be scary, but think about the freedom you will have without the debt hanging over you. Whether or not you choose to go this route to get out of debt is a personal decision - just make sure to list all the pros and cons of doing so. I would advise trying to negotiate directly first before using a consolidation company. If anyone wants the info for the company that helped me, feel free to hit me up and I'll send it....they are located in NJ.
