Mittelschmerz! Let's discuss.

I'm curious if anyone else feels ovulation (that is what mittelschmerz means, for those not familiar with the awesome word) , and how long it lasts for you.

I get mildly crampy for a few days before I O and then it's a sharper pain that lasts for a couple hours, and then back to light cramping for the next day-ish.

And now I'm getting a flash back to the crazy who said she saw herself ovulate. Those were the good time, no?

Re: Mittelschmerz! Let's discuss.

  • I don't usually feel anything. I think I did the cycle I was on Femara, but it could've been psychological (I was expecting to O, and I was paying closer attention, so any pain in that region had to be O pain, not gas, right? lol). It was just mild cramps for a little while one evening. I'll be taking Femara again this cycle, so I'll see if I feel anything similar.
  • @knitnat28 - I'm thinking there's a definite 'in my head' component to this. A main reason I asked, actually. I should have titled this "So tell me, how crazy is GoodWolf?". I'm curious to see if you notice it while on Femara again!

  • I get ovulation pain. I always knew what side was the dominant side before going in for monitoring appointments.

The first time I had a medicated cycle, when I actually O'd, I was sitting in a work cafeteria and I KNOW I felt it. I had triggered, so I was accurate on timing. Call me crazy, but it was a sharp ache that lasted for about 5 minutes.

I've had ovulation cramping for every other cycle and it has always lasted 1-3 days. That first time was the only time that I knew the actual hour.

  • I have no idea if that's what it is, but I can tell when I ovulate. At least the the few times I have in the last 5 years. On my medical cycles and the two random cycles that I ovulated on my own, I get a VERY sharp pain that lasts a couple minutes on the side that I ovulate from that month, right where the ovary is, right on the day I o'ed. (I assume this is the same for the 2 non-medicated cycles that I O'ed,but I didn't have a sono to tell me what was going on so I can't say 100%). I know it was accurate on the medicated cycles b/c I had sonograms the afternoons of the IUIs (pre-O) and sonograms the next morning to confirm ovulation. I also always have cramping and pelvic pain following O up until a couple days before AF shows up. I have sworn I had UTI's based on the pain, but it's not. The first non-medicated random ovulation, I even went to the doctor and was getting frustrated because everything was coming back clean (which is good) had pelvic exams, and couldn't figure out what was causing the pain.

I'm actually grateful for it because like with this last cycle, I had a clue what it could be. It is painful and not fun though..

In Christ alone my hope is found. He is my LIGHT, my STRENGTH, and my SONG!

T-TTC since Dec 2008. PCOS/nonexistant cycles(anovulation) and endo. HSG in '10 revealed both tubes blocked. Lap surgery in Dec '10 to correct. Failed Clomid/IUI and injectable(Bravelle)/IUI cycles so far.

  • I definite feel it when I ovulate. I also had the dominant side confirmed through ultrasound. This is a new thing for me though, only in the last six months or so. (Granted I was on bc of some form until 07/2012) sometimes they feel like rocks, swear to god, but other times it's a very distinct sharp pain(possibly when egg is releasing?)

  • I can feel it.  I wouldn't call it pain, more like a little bit of discomfort.  When I had my IUI though I was quite crampy when I ovulated.  I assumed it because there were more mature follicles.

  • I always do. Most prominently on the right side. It feels like an ache that lasts all day that eventually gets sharper then subsides.

Even though it hasn't happened in years, it feels so similar to when I've had cysts rupture that it scared me every cycle.

  • I feel it, usually on one side, on O day.

  • I don't think I've ever felt it on my left side, but I'm pretty sure I've felt it a couple of times on the right. It's an acute, crampy discomfort that lasts a couple of hours, on and off.

Typically, I don't feel anything though.

  • I was stuck in a car the first time I realized what I was feeling was ovulation pain. It's no joke when they say some people confuse it with appendicitis!

Side note - is heat bad to apply when ovulating? I know someone mentioned hot baths/showers are bad during ovulation. It just feels so goooood to put that heating pad on when the MITTELSCHMERZ gets bad.

I didn't know that's bad. Well, shit. Cold showers from now on. I shower in hot lava.

Okay, okay. I'm not giving up hot showers for anything. Anything, I tell ya.

  • I've felt it a couple of times. It lasted maybe 8 hours and varied from dull to sharp throughout the day. It was pretty intense at times and impossible to ignore. For some reason I only felt it during a couple of natural cycles (most of my cycles were medicated b/c I didn't often O on my own).

Hey, I'm with you in that. H can't take showers at the same temperature as I do, he uses words like 'scalding' and 'blisters'. Whatever, I like my bones to be nice and toasty after a shower. None of this luke warm nonsense.

  • Speaking of showers... A good shower head can do wonders, if ya know what I mean ;)

And I've never felt mittelschmerz. I feel left out.

  • I usually don't notice, but I may have felt it a couple cycles ago. It was just a semi-sharp pain on one side that lasted maybe 10 minutes. I didn't expect to O that day, but temps confirmed the next day, so I figured that was probably what it was.

I don't know about the heating pad, but the Making Babies book advised me to eat warm or hot food, snd to counteract any cold items with hot. It supposedly helps. So I would imagine the heat of the pad wouldn't be bad.

Also, I get o pain as well. I always did, just didn't know whst it was until I started charting.  I o mostly from my right. In addition to that, as my hormones shift, I also get this glorious feeling of being stabbed up my vag. My Dr assures me it's normal but I don't know anyone else that gets it.

Mine isn't during o. I can't predict or connect it with my chart. It's just what the dr. Told me. She said it was no big deal. Honestly,  I hate when I grt it at work. Kind of weird when I make pain faces in front of teenagers.

Glad I am not the only one.
