Adalyn's Birth Story

Adalyn's Delivery

Checked into the hospital at 6am. Took them 3 tries to get the IV in. They tried my forearm and wrist, and were finally able to get it in my left hand. I have tiny veins and most are zig zag and not straight.

I was given pitocin at 8am. They upped the dose every 30 minutes. I was 3cm and 90% effaced at 845am, so my doctor decided to break my water. Contractions began getting more uncomfortable with each one. Most of the pain was in my lower back.

I had progressed to 4cm by 11am. Contractions after this point changed from just lower back to full on pain radiating from the top to bottom of my uterus. They were getting closer and closer and more and more painful. They got to the point where I was really crying through each one but was fighting to avoid pain meds.

I got IV pain meds at 2pm to hold me over until I got the epidural at 3pm because I just couldn't relax with all the pain and they were worried it would keep the baby from moving down because I was so tense. DH said he was proud I made it that far but an epi was the best for me and the baby at that point. It took two local anesthesia shots to get the epi in because I spasmed the first time he tried to put it in and it was dangerous. After the second shot I was able to sit still so he could get it in.

After the epi the doctor checked me and I was at a 5 and 100% effaced, baby was at zero station. They put internal monitors in, but ended up taking them out later because baby kept moving them and pushing them out. I was given oxygen since I wasn't getting enough.

I was 6-7cm at 530pm, and at this point I clicked the button for another epi dose since I could start to feel tightening of contractions and I didn't want it to wear off by the time I could start pushing.

I was fully dilated at 8pm. The nurse decided to have me labor we down for two hours, and my body was able to move her way down.
I started pushing at 10:15pm and 30 minutes later they called the doctor and made me stop pushing because I was doing so well. The doctor got there about just after 11 and told me to start pushing again. I pushed three times and she arrived at 11:06pm on October 3rd weighing 7lb 4oz and 18 1/2" long. I was so happy she made it before midnight so she could have her own birthday (my cousins is the 4th).

I only got a superficial tear, so I got three stitches. They only stung the first time I went to the bathroom and now they're fine. Probably because of the witch hazel and antiseptics.

She latches well and I'm producing a good amount of colostrum. Breast feeding is strange, but in such an amazing way. I was worried about it being weird and being freaked out by it, but I feel really amazing being able to provide for my daughter in that way.

Anyways, I am still wrapping my head around being a mom. It's hard to process that this little baby is my daughter. It hasn't really sunk in yet but I do think she is the most adorable little baby out there. :)
