Vitamin D and fertility

I noticed that while taking Vitamin D supplements my cycles were more regular, with earlier ovulation. I did a quick search on the Goog and found some interesting reads I thought I'd share (didn't expect to find anything, I google stuff like this all the time to no avail). Not sure if this has been discussed, but I started taking D again this cycle so we'll see if it helps. Here's one of the articles I found:

@ILoveRedVino I've been told that a lot, too. I'd never thought about it impacting fertility, though. I've heard the majority of people in the PNW are clinically VitD deficient. I hope they start/continue with more research in this area!

ETA: And by "this area" I mean the area of study in Vitamin D deficiency effects, not the PNW area ;) though we would make good case study subjects

Does taking a prenatal not cover this for most women who have a deficiency? My prenatal has 100% vitamin D3. Plus, spending time out in the sun helps with natural vitamin D production in the body.

  • @LuckyAngel07 the article mentioned sunlight is definitely the best source, but supplements should be significantly more than 100%DV. But I think it's important to get tested first before loading up on D excessively. :)

I don't think anyone would say this is a universal fix. It's an interesting study that I had never heard, and it sounds like it is in the RE knowledge base.

  • My naturopath had me tested and I began supplementing in addition to my prenatal. I'm in Canada and take 2000iU a day from Sept-May/June. I don't bother in the summer because of the sun, but the rest of the year it's impossible for me to get enough. Very interesting fact about earlier O, just another reason to continue.

I am also in the PNW (Seattle) and have been taking an extra 1000 vitamin D for about 8 years now (in addition to a PNV which I have been taking for about 8 years because it was the only vitamin I could find with iron and I was anemic).

My Grandmother died of MS and it is linked to the PNW and the thought is that MS is tied to low vitamin D.

I have heard it is also good to help with depression/anxiety (though I don't know - a friend said her doctor recommended it for that).

  • @cinderin I have heard all of that! The MS relation is unnerving. We have a much higher rate than the rest of the nation. And Vitamin D helps with my anxiety, though I don't know how much of that relates to placebo effect :)

  • I've been taking vitamin D3 since I started PNV. My GP said vitamin D is the "vitamin of the decade." I'll take whatever to help me feel healthier and get pregnant...
