AW: Telling the Parentals (Long w/ PIP)

It was a weekend of telling our parents the big news. So here's how the days happened.

Friday:  We told my mom and dad.  We went out to dinner with them at my dads favorite restaurant.  I placed an insert in their menu that looked like this...

       Today’s Specials

Grilled Chicken Breast………………..$8.99
     - 8oz chicken breast grilled to perfection. Served with
                potato and steamed vegetables.

Broiled Cod…………………………………$9.99
   - 6oz fillet broiled with lemon juice. Served with
                potato and steamed vegetables.

Chef Salad………………………………….$7.95
    - Bed of lettuce topped with chicken, ham, 3 assorted cheeses
                egg, onion, green peppers.

Baby M………………………….Priceless
   - Comes with tiny fingers and toes, takes 9 months to cook.
                Expires 6/7/14.

Unfortunately, since this is a place my parents regularly go to, they didn't even look at the menu.  So I mentioned to my mom that they had some specials, and she should check them out.  Then she got the hint that something was up and she needed to look at the menu.  She read it, and said "Baby M? You aren't serious are you?"  Then she had my dad read it, and it took him a bit to catch on. Once he caught it, his face got beet red and he was trying to choke back tears (the only time he's ever cried was my wedding).  Then he proceeded to show every single waitress that walked by, and tell them that he's going to be a grandpa.  The only thing he's mad about is that he can't tell anyone. He's a terrible secret keeper, so this could get interesting. He's already called me twice today to complain to me that this is a hard secret to keep. Poor guy.

Saturday: Telling FIL and SMIL.  FIL turned 50 last week, and he had always joked with us that he thought we would be pregnant by the time he was 50.  We always laughed it off, and told him that he had 5 years (that was what we told everyone). So we gave him a late birthday card.  We just told him that we forgot to give it to him at his birthday dinner last week.  SMIL wasn't paying attention to the card when he opened it, and he read the front of it out loud. Then didn't read the inside out loud.  He looked at me with a questioning look, and I just nodded my head yes. Then he handed it to SMIL to have her read the inside.  We wrote, "Happy 50th Birthday Grandpa!"  She squealed and came up to rub my belly (I see many discussions about this in our future). Then I told her that I'm only 5 weeks and it's still just my belly pudge. Not baby.

Sunday: Telling MIL and BIL.  We had both of them over for dinner, and to carve pumpkins.  I bought 4 large sized pumpkins for us to carve, and one small pumpkin.  She asked me what the small pumpkin was for, and I told her it was the dog's pumpkin. I got done carving my pumpkin, and started to carve the baby one.  They both asked me what I was going to carve on such a small pumpkin, and I told them that it was a surprise. Here's what I put...

MIL just kept saying, "very funny, you're joking."  Nope, we're not. We're serious. Then it was, "Wait, you're pregnant? Like, a positive test and everything?" Yuppers, 3 positives to be exact.

So it was a fun weekend telling them all.  The most fun out of it was that we had always told them all that it would be 5 years before we would have kids.  My mom and MIL both knew about my PCOS and that it would likely take some assistance for us to get pregnant. So they were caught completely off guard with this. My mom also played 20 questions with me yesterday, and asked if we did a medicated cycle.  I laid it all out to her that we did, and I e-mailed her the link to my blog about our journey.  She later apologized for some of the comments she made within the last 6 months, because she didn't realize what we were going through.

The only negative is that we now have this really cute pumpkin that we can't put outside with the rest of our pumpkins, because we live in a very small town where everyone knows each other. We don't want people to catch onto it or know.  So it's sitting on our mantle.

Re: AW: Telling the Parentals (Long w/ PIP)

  • I love it!!

good luck getting your dad to keep the secret. I'm really worried my IL's are going to spill the beans and i'll be royally pissed. my MIL already told me I needed to tell SIL soon because she has already almost said something several times. UM please don't!! I'd like to at least see the baby's heartbeat first! I had H tell her again this morning that this is a secret we need her to keep!

    I'm so excited for you:)

  • I overheard that my parents went to the bar after dinner Friday night, and bought everyone a round of drinks (yeah, small town).  His comment was, "I can't tell why, but I'm excited and buying everyone a round." lol. Oh dad.....

He also went Saturday morning and bought it a pedal tractor (he's a farmer).  I tried explaining to him that the kid won't be able to use that for a few years from now. So there's no rush.  I think he's just that excited.

Now we just need to figure out how to tell my brother.  I'm really afraid to. I don't see him very often, and he's older than me, but I'm more of the "big sister." As in, I'm the one always pep-talking him and helping him through things. Let's just say that he doesn't really have his head on straight, and is suffering through depression.  He's always saying of how he should be married and have a kid by now, and he doesn't even have a girlfriend. So I want to be suttle and sensitive about the way I tell him.  I'm thinking about just waiting until we have the ultrasound, and giving him a picture of his niece/nephew. I know he will be happy and excited, but I also know it will be hard on him.

  • So cute and sweet!

Keeping the secret is hard and they will mess up. Half of them probably won't tell you till the secret is out. Unless they tell older women, they don't keep secrets. I had BIL's grandmothers congratulating me at SIL's shower. They did it privately so nobody heard expect me. SIL obviously didn't keep her mouth shut to BIL's side of the family.
