  • I don't have a favorite charity, but I donate to a few different ones.  Mainly pet rescues and cancer research.

  • My go-to charity organization is the American Red Cross. H is a volunteer CPR instructor with the ARC and I am a regular (when not pregnant) blood donor. They are our preferred charity to donate money to, especially after a disaster, we feel like we have a better idea of where our funds are going.

  • I volunteer for 4H.  I was in 4H as a kid and think a lot of people forget about it.  It means a lot to me, so I like to put my time there.  Mostly in the livestock progams at the fair.
  • H & I are both volunteer EMT's in our town. We donate 12 hours a week (Monday nights) to the squad.

  • I usually donate to the Alzheimer's Association. My grandfather was diagnosed over 13 years ago and, although my family tried to take care of him at home for as long as we could, he's now in a nursing home. It is an incredibly sad disease that not only takes an enormous toll on the patient, but on the caregivers as well.

My cousin is also running the Chicago Marathon on Sunday with the "AlzStars team" to raise money for the Alzheimer's Association. She's never run before, but she was inspired to run a marathon to raise money to finally find a cure for this disease. It's ridiculous that Alzheimer's is the 6th leading cause of death in the US, but is the ONLY disease in the top 10 that cannot be prevented, the progression slowed, nor can it be cured. I find this completely unacceptable!

PS: if anyone is interested in donating to my cousin's fundraising page, please let me know

  • @Nic12184, my grandmother also suffered from Alzheimer's and it really is an awful disease.  I know what your family is going through.

I donate to the college where I got my bachelor's degree once a year.  I also donate to the Bronx Zoo every year and H and I do a walk that they have in the spring.  If friends are doing walks/runs for charity, I usually give to them also.  Like @WillyH19, I am a regular blood donor.  I haven't donated since the spring though, I've been lazy :(
  • I'll usually donate a little to United Way and Blue Jeans for Babies and stuff when those things come around at school. I've never really been in a place to donate more than a few bucks before, maybe I can finally contribute a little more now. I would donate to St. Jude when I was working for Sterling Jewelers.

  • I don't have a favorite, but I donate a lot.  I usually donate to anything my friends or family are fundraising for (American Cancer Society usually).  There's also a young woman in my hometown who is terminally ill and her family has fundraising events that I donate to every time.

  • March of dimes and make a wish are my ones I tend to donate to. I used to be a regular blood donor but I tend to have extremely low ferritin (so I have almost no iron reserve) so it's not the best idea for me to continue to donate even when I meet their criteria.

Nic: 13 years with Alzheimer's is incredible (and awful). My grandmother was diagnosed sometime around 1993 and ended up on a nursing home in 1998. She died in 2007 after she stopped eating and drinking. Letting her go was much more humane than watching her die that slow death. She died one month to the day after my grandfather (her husband of 60 years. In my heart, I truly believe she knew he was gone.

I donate to my college, and we do a lot of funraisers at work support military and their families.
