Are you getting your kids' teacher a Halloween gift?

I don't recall doing that last year, but there was some discussion about it in my neighborhood. I just don't want to be the only one not doing this!

Re: Are you getting your kids' teacher a Halloween gift?

  • heck no!

  • No, never.   Halloween is not a gift giving holiday.
  • No way! Ugh I hate that this is a discussion! Haha!

  • I'm sorry -- believe me, I wasn't planning on it but my neighbor is making something for her kid's teacher. It seemed above and beyond what is expected, but then I wanted to make sure!
  • I did not plan on it!!  Christmas, yes.  Halloween, hell no.

on that note, do I have to send in treats for Jake's class?  In daycare, it seemed like most parents sent in something for the kids so I'll continue to do it for Liam, but I'm just wondering what the protocol is for school.

I don't know either. And honestly I wouldn't be surprised if they didnt do anything since 1. Not everybody celebrates Halloween and 2. Ours is half day so how can they find the time???

I am hoping we would get a note or something. I don't even know how many kids her class has!

For after school they mentioned something in our newsletter about signing up in the class (more like daycare situation obviously) to limit the # of sweets.

    This. 100% this.
  • We do still do Halloween/Christmas/Valentine treats for school.  In K and 1st grade, the teacher split the kids in to 3 groups and each kid was assigned one holiday.  So if your name was under Halloween, you were supposed to bring in a treat for the class for that holiday.  But, for the other 2 (it's the 3 they have parties for), you did not need to.   I think part of the reason is because the kids get so much and the other part is we have a large population of low income people, so it is less of  a burden to them to send in a treat for only one party.   Noah likes to take a treat, so we always sent a treat for all 3 - and I figured that would cover someone who was on the list who didn't bring anything.

Also, they usually call it a "Harvest Party" and parade at our school, to make it more inclusive to the people that don't celebrate Halloween.

    Hell no.
  • Um, yeah. NO. That Mom either has too much time on her hands, is a Pinterest addict, lives vicariously through her kid, or is trying to score bonus points.

Or all of the above. Look, I like to find the best in people, but this is taking it way too far and screams ulterior motive.

I just started last year with a gift at Thanksgiving, actually, with a nice "thankful for you" type note. This was to the school teacher. Daycare was still Christmas.

Emmy - I didn't do treat bags last year in Kindergarten, but Gavin did come home with maybe 2 or 3 from the other kids (on top of the goodies from the class party). It did surprise me, but it didn't make me feel bad for not doing it. I know the one, which was a bit elaborate, was the Classroom Mom and one with too much time on her hands - always trying to make a big deal out of everything. I appreciated it for the parties, though. LOL

  • My Mom is a 4th grade teacher and she was horrified when I told her I wasn't doing anything for Keefer's preschool teachers as far as a "fall gift" goes.  She told me that everytime they have a party, I am supposed to send a gift which I think is crazy and the teacher's would get sick of trying to find something to do with all that crap.  I did however pick up some cute little handmade witches at a craft fair I went to over the weekend and am going to send it on the day of the Halloween party this year.  If I hadn't seen anything I wanted to buy though, I would've just ignored my Mom's dismay and probably not done a gift again or maybe sent a little mum or or something.

  • I just made orange candles and put Jack o'Lantern faces on them.  They were $1 from the Dollar Tree so instead of a treat, they get the candle.
