NBR: gift ideas

You are probably going to think I am crazy, but I am thinking about Christmas gifts today.  And I am asking you ladies, well because you all rock.

So I trying to think of ideas for my coworkers.  I work with about 20 people and last year I received gifts from many of them so I feel kind of obligated to give back.  At the same time I don't want to spend a ton of money.  I usually do make Christmas cookies, but on the receiving end I rarely eat them because I get so inundated with sweets!  Not to mention I work with almost all women, most of who are at some stage of a diet.  Any creative ideas?

FWIW I work at a vet clinic so they are all animals lovers, but not all book lovers :(

Re: NBR: gift ideas

  • Do they all have animals?  You could make homemade dog or cat treats.
  • I make egg nog in bulk every Christmas. I get glass jars from The Container Store or from Ikea, and give em out to friends and family. It's very inexpensive and my friends/family look forward to getting egg nog every year :)

I am the nutrition person at work, so it would be quite funny to make treats for their pets.

It's my grandmother's recipe. I don't have it in this computer but all it takes is a bottle of Rum, condensed milk, evaporated milk, eggs, nutmeg and cinnamon.

  • I have made coasters a couple years ago and that was a huge hit and pretty cheap! I've done stencil and paint and I have also used scrapbook paper and modge podge and they both were awesome!

  • I always like making different breads for Christmas.  There's this orange & cranberry bread with a grand marnier glaze that I made last year that received A LOT of compliments.  It's always nice with tea or coffee.

  • My parents always give out home made Baileys.
Last year I made home made handscrub stuff and put it in fancy mason jars. It was super cheap and everyone loved them.

I give everyone a card with a Lottery ticket in it. $1 per person, but fun for the recipient. I'm in CA, don't know the "lottery situation" in other states, though....

  • I definitely don't think you are crazy- I've already bought some gifts for this year.

    What about cinnamon ornaments?

I love cinnamon ornaments! You could make them animal shaped, though the star ones look cute on trees.

Nothing else to add other than I've been shopping for Christmas since last week and am working on a shopping list. I will be prepared this year. I will not procrastinate. I will. not. procrastinate.

  • I've done homemade jam in the past as well. I also have done these clear glass ornaments that a girl from the Pets board made. Inside she would put a name or monogram or whatever. It was years ago so I have no idea if she still does them or not. What I am trying to get around to is that maybe you could find some cute animal-themed ornaments.

  • I'm probably no help, but I make fudge for my coworkers. But, I only give it to 4 coworkers.

Be careful about how many gifts you hand out because you will then feel obligated every year.

You could also bring in something for the whole group to enjoy.  (fruit tray, veggie tray, etc...)

Also, you can make homemade vegetable soup & put in mason jars.

I think that sounds like a great idea!

  • I went to Vistaprint and got personalized note cards for all my friends.  You can pick whatever background you want - customize to the person, there are tons of options (classic, modern, fun, childish, etc.) - and personalize with their name. You pick the type of paper - cardstock, linen.   Notecards come in packs of 10 with 10 plain white envelopes, or you can pay a little extra for coordinating envelopes.  I had a groupon and an online coupon and ended up paying less than $2 for each pack.   They all turned out very nice and I think my friends will appreciate them.

Planning ahead is good :).  How about: animal calenders, fancy pens, tea bags or hot chocolate mix inside mugs, baked goods, or framed pictures of everyone at the office.
ETA Or little sleighs of chocolate bars and candy canes.

  • Thanks ladies! There are some awesome ideas in here.

And yeah... Thankfully I work in a very small office so my gift #s shouldn't grow. But like I said I was the only one who didn't bring something last year. Between that and my position I feel obligated to do something for them.
