Talk to me about OPKs (PIP)

I've done some Google-ing on how to use OPKs, but wanted to ask for any tips or advice from you ladies. Things I now know:
  1. FMU is not ideal (why is this? false positives?)
  2. Test more than 1x/day around O time
  3. It is positive if part of the line is as dark as the control
So what time is ideal? I've read late morning, early afternoon, both, evening... How many times a day do you recommend testing? I really have no history with OPKs, and when I was temping I never had an O "pattern" so I'm not sure when I might O. I am not temping this cycle, it was a bit to stressful for me when I did, and I would obsess over my temps. So I'm only tracking CM, CP, and OPKs. I'm hoping to O anytime before CD17. I'm on CD15 now.

Now the PIP - I've taken one OPK for the last four days. From top to bottom:
  1. Sun CD12 PM,
  2. Mon CD13 FMU
  3. Tues CD14 FMU
  4. (today) Wed CD15 SMU.

I have the option to test at work. When should I test today? If I get a darker OPK this afternoon, should I take one this evening, too? Now that knowing when I O really matters, I know I'm over analyzing it. Any advice would be coveted. Huge TIA!

Re: Talk to me about OPKs (PIP)

  • I always tested with FMU actually and never had any problems.  Even though my cycles were unpredictable, I would start taking them a few days before the earliest I ever o'd.  So I usually o'd around CD 19 and would start taking them around CD 14-15.  My boobs also hurt around o time, so I usually knew when to start taking them.  When they started getting darker I would test twice a day.  Once with FMU and then usually in the afternoon or evening.

  • Great, thank you @sparklingdiamond! My boobs also get super sensitive when I O, which is usually a pretty good indicator. But I'm not sure if it happens before or after I O. We'll see. Thanks again!

  • I found I got good results testing around 10am and 4pm. Usually I had a shorter surge and one of those times would catch it. I usually start using them around CD12, once a day until they start getting darker, then start doing 2 a day. I think that the problem with testing once a day is that sometimes you can miss your surge. The problem with FMU is that sometimes the LH can build up in your system(like HCG) and lead to enough to get a positive even though you aren't really surging.

Your one from today looks close. I would test again to see if you get a positive and HIO anyway tonight. What time did you take the test today? I'd probably test again around 6 hours after that. Looks like you'll be O'ing soon, good luck!

  • I've since discovered that opks are useless for me due to wacky hormones, but when I did use them on medicated cycles, I was told by my RE to use 2nd morning urine (chance of false positives with fmu bc the concentration could be too high) and then test again later in the day. I tested around 10, 2pm, and sometimes again at 7 or 8pm. I did have false positives, but again, that's bc my body is stupid lol

If I were you, I'd try to test at work around 2 or 3 and then again this evening sometime if you have enough tests. GL!

  • Awesome, good to know @BioGirl21 and @RockABye!

FWIW I tested with SMU this AM at about 7:15. I will probably test around 1 or 2. And if it's darker but not for sure +, again this evening. And of course we'll BIO also if they get darker. Again, thanks for the tips!

  • I always started testing when I got EWCM and usually tested with FMU or SMU and then around 5pm when I got home from work if the morning one looked close.

  • I know it's commonly said to not use FMU for testing, but I think it may differ by test.  Wondfo instructions say any is appropriate for testing.  When you're first starting out testing with them, you can use the Wondfo chart for knowing when to start.

I would start testing when I noticed a change in CM.  I'd test with FMU only at first.  If the line was getting darker (I'd get a fade in pattern) then I'd start testing 2x a day with FMU and then after work.

Here's the link to the full Wondfo instructions:

  • I usually got a fade in pattern as well. If I was using IC, I would start testing about a week or so after AF since my cycles were unpredictable. I usually tested using second morning urine and then as the lines got darker, I would test in the afternoon/evening as well.

I always used an IC first and then a digi to confirm if it looked somewhat positive.

Also, just to give you an idea of what they look like when they turn positive I'll attach some pics.

The one pic both lines are the same. That I counted as + and it turned a digi + as well. In the second pic, the test line is actually darker than the control line. This incidentally coincided with my BFP cycle.

  • I usually tested twice a day, with FMU and then in the evening after work.  I always got 2-3 days of +OPK's before actually O-ing, though, so it's not like I was going to miss my surge.  I just liked peeing on things.

    A. I think im seeing your pic upside down B. I get a fade pattern too, so if I'm looking at yours in the correct direction it looks like you're close. mine get darker and darker until they're the same. C. I rarely test at night bc i've had so much to drink by then. but normally I use FMU and if it's a close call I check again mid afternoon.
