Fail :-(

Went in for bloodwork today and apparently my body decided it didn't want to give any up.  They used both arms and only got one vial. Now I have to have MORE taken next tuesday when I go in for my HSG. I totally started crying in the office. And it REALLY doesn't help when I'm absurdly and irrationally afraid of having my blood drawn/IV's. Shots-no prob, give you a shot-no prob, give you a shot in your eye-no prob, slice you and dice you-no prob. I don't know what my problem is with bloodwork. but this did NOT help. So I treated myself to a PSL at starbucks on the way home. This whine is also my multitasking update for this week. DH's SA is friday.

  • That sounds awful, DM! How in the world are they not able to draw blood?

I'm sorry it was such a terrible experience for you. You deserved that PSL!

  • I'm sorry it was a tough draw. Mine always are too and I'm fairly terrified of them since the experiences have been so bad. It really sucks. Now they have to use a baby needle... Maybe they could try that next time?

I totally treated myself to a PSL after my last draw too. Enjoy it!

  • I'm so sorry :-(  That sounds horrible!  I used to hate having my blood taken...like to the point that I would pretty much pass out!  I still hate it now, but stupid IF has helped me get used to it a little since I have had to have it taken so often!  I hope it goes better next time!

  • I was so afraid when I had to go get my blood drawn a few weeks ago because I'm usually a really tough stick. It was fasting blood work too. The night before I tried to drink as much water as possible and then I tried to keep warm by wearing a sweatshirt. I've heard that helps. I don't know if that helped or if it was just the fact that I had a really great phlebotomist but they had no problems. It was a relief.

Sorry you had trouble today. Hopefully when they draw it next week it will flow right out!

When I went last Wednesday, the lady poked and dug around twice and never got anything. I then almost passed out. She had a different lady come in and try once I felt better, and she got it on the first poke.

  • I actually had blood drawn once at the pediatric ward of my medical group bc it was for HCG testing and the wait in the adult room was over and hour and I had an appointment. So they shooed me over to Pediatrics and the tech was AMAZING!!
POINT OF STORY - maybe you can ask to go to a pediatric lab since they are used to tricky and small veins...

  • I'm sorry :( I'm a really hard stuck too... My veins are deeeeeep and like to roll. Definitely ask if they can use a butterfly needle next time and drink TONS of water over the course of the few hours before your draw! It always helps me. Can you lay down when they do it? Maybe that will help your anxiousness! I also always drink water while they're drawing the blood it's a distraction for me. Well, that and I'm a nervous talker so I talk the entire time lol. I hope it's much better next time!

In Christ alone my hope is found. He is my LIGHT, my STRENGTH, and my SONG!

  • Sorry today's blood draw sucked. I hope the next one goes more smoothly, and that you get good news from hubby's SA.
  • I'm sorry to hear that it didn't go well.  Like others said, make sure to drink lots of water leading up to the next time and hopefully it'll go smoothly for you.

  • Oh honey I'm sorry I know how much being a tough draw sucks!! I have to get it drawn from my hand most times.

Try drinking a gatorade before you go in, also hang your arm down way low when you are sitting in the seat before they draw, like almost touching the ground. You can also apply a heat pack which will draw your veins out more. Don't be afraid to stand up for your rights when they start poking and prodding, ask for a pedi needle and a skill phelbotomist. Tell them not to stick until they are sure they feel a vein. And if it take a while, TOO BAD at least they didnt hurt you too bad in the process. I always get the "it will hurt more in your hand, let me just dig in your arm for a new hours instead" thanks, I would rather it pinch more initially then have you go hunting for treasure.

    Good luck next time!!
