YA Books That Changed Our Lives- NBC version

A previous post, made me think to do this.  So many of the books on the CNN list (I think that's where it was from) are so old, and in my opinion not really YA.  So, let's make our own list!

And, go!

Re: YA Books That Changed Our Lives- NBC version

  • This Lullaby - Sarah Dessen

This book made me fall in love with YA. If I didn't read this book, I would have never really tried to pursue the crazy idea of writing a novel. I would have never known how to write a YA book. I would have never gotten an agent or gotten a book deal or gone back to school to get my MFA. Falling in love with this book literally did change the course of my life.

That's at the top of all my lists. No other series has made me feel so many feels when reading. They have such a strong message about love and friendship, bravery and doing the right thing, loss and prejudice. JKR's writing is amazing.
I didn't start reading them until after I saw the 3rd movie in theaters and fell in love with them before I'd even gotten halfway through book 4.
I reread them every year and it's really not enough. I already want to do another reread soon. Every time I reread I pick up on even more things JKR left for us to find, tiny bits of foreshadowing and how she'll mention something in book 2 that becomes a bigger theme in book 4, etc.
    I'll shut up now.

    When I was a YA:

    TKAM

    Fahrenheit 451

Are you there God? It's Me, Margaret.

    A Seperate Peace

    Little Women

    As an adult:

    HP, of course

    The Book Thief

    TFIOS

    and...

I hate to admit it, but, Twilight. I have always loved reading, but that book is what really lead me to try more YA books, including HP. It opened up a whole new world of awesome books for me.

I have to say Twilight because that was really my first jump into YA. I had read HP but, otherwise, I read only adult books and didn't read that often. After Twilight, I dove right in and became much more passionate about reading in general. For that, I am forever grateful.

Others include Hunger Games. Pretty much all the Sarah Dessen books.(I have given them all 4-5 stars). Anna and the French Kiss/Lola and the Boy Next Door, Infernal Devices, TFiOS, Divergent, Just One Day

Also, I get confused with HP. They are in the kids section at our library so I am not sure what to consider them but they are definitely the best series of all time. the end!

    2014 Reading Goal: 85

  • HP. Duh.

The Dark is Rising series. These books introduced me to fantasy, which led me to sci-fi and beyond.  (The movie was terrible though. I wish they never made it into a movie.)

  • Harry Potter was my first real YA experience that made me fall in love with YA.  Then, Twilight and The Hunger Games.

  • Harry Potter for reals.

I've always been a reader, but I let myself get stale with reading through/right after college.  When I read the HP series it totally reminded me what it felt like to fall in complete and utter love with books/characters and re-ignited my love of fiction.

    52 Books in 2014??

There was a movie???  I love these books so much they're some of the few that were carried from my childhood bookshelf to my adult bookshelf.

HP - I can probably count the number of books I read for fun in college on my hands, and I read each of these as they were released.

I'm going to say Twilight too.  Before Twilight, I would have completely skipped the YA section of the bookstore.  While it was never one of my favorites, it really did open my eyes to the entire genre, and I would be missing SO MUCH if I still walked past YA just because I'm a grown-up.

  • Twilight series - This is the book that brought me to NBC and got me reading again (as I told @ceresas my first "get back into reading" pick was actually Einstein but I never got past page 1) and it also opened up this whole world of YA to me. If it weren't for this series I would have lost out on SO MANY amazing friends and I wouldn't have discovered new YA when I did. I probably wouldn't be writing either.

Harry Potter - Like @84Lauren, these books made me fall in love with reading again. The world JKR built and all the intricasies of the story entranced me and these books really are magical.

Jessica Darling series - This series made me fall in love with contemporary YA.
