Re: Today Show American Girl doll deal for $60

  • Wow, too bad my girls aren't old enough for this.  That's a really great deal.

  • OMG! and it is the doll EJ wanted too!
(we read those books last year).  Now I am tempted to get her both Marie Grace and Cecile....

    Thanks for posting!
I'm really tempted by this! Dd has the target generic doll that reminds me of American girl dolls (though not historical) from a couple Christmases ago and has really been into her lately. I had been thinking of buying a friend for her.

But I never had an American girl doll and the deal makes me want to get it, ha! Not sure how much dd would love it though.

  • Seriously, Kris. Thank you for sharing this deal.  I hated spending that much on a doll, Christmas shopping complete!

No problem! I am off today and saw this and thought it would help someone's Christmas shopping. My youngest sisters had them, well they still have them and loved them. My youngest sister started with Bitsy Baby. They probably have 8 between them. They still look great 20 years later.

  • We have Bitsy Baby too.  Now the hard part is not buying her too much extra between now and Christmas!

Amanda--I was just thinking about checking out some of the American Girl books to read to DD.  She will be 5 in March--good age?  She's really into chapter books now, we've been reading Junie B. Jones, Ivy and Bean.  She recently picked out a book from the Rainbow Fairies series, but I thought it was awful and do not want to go back there if possible.

I also picked up Little House on the Prairie to try--in an effort to show her how much she has and to be more grateful.

I'm curious about the books too.

Amy, dd is really into chapter books too. we just started the Never Girl series. Not sure how great it will be but its cute so far. Girls end up in Never land with Tinkerbell. Was up dd's alley. There are 4 books so far.

We've been reading Ivy and Bean and while they are ok I kind of hate some of the language. Not that it's bad but I feel like I have to point out we shouldn't say those things (or skip reading it). So Never girls has been a nice change of pace!

I have 1 of my old little house on the praire books but haven't tried it with her yet. I've been thinking about it.

I feel the same way about Ivy and Bean.  And Junie--I feel like there are a LOT of good examples on how NOT to act.

  • The Rainbow Fairies was fine, but the writing was just blah.

  • So yes, we have been on and off reading the American Girl books through the past year. (EJ turns 6 in December). They held her interest and she was always eager to start another. So we read the Marie Grace and Cecile series in full.  There are some more adult themes in them, slavery, segregation, illness and death. But I didn't find they really were troubling to her and find that all of those topics worth introducing and not hiding at an age appropriate level. Also, there is about one picture per chapter so that helped hold her interest. the little house books have fewer illustrations and we started those this summer. I am not sure it would be a good place to go next in the chapter book evolution. But EJ enjoyed the first few of those too. She stalled on "by the shores of silver lake" or whatever comes after plum creek. I think because Laura was older and she could not relate as much to her character.

We have one of the Target ones. I won't buy an AG doll. They're too expensive, and DD is too hard on her toys. I'm planning on getting another Target one this year.
