When you throw parties, do you usually cater, make your own food, Potluck or something else?

Re: Do you cater or cook?

  • It all depends on what the party is for. If it's one that H and I are throwing (like our Halloween party), then we will provide everything.  If it's Thanksgiving, then we provide the ham and turkey, but usually divide out the rest of the dishes and everyone brings one.

Sometimes we will do potluck style also, especially for summer pool parties when everyone just needs to bring a bag of chips or some veggies. We also usually do BYOB too, but we provide non-alcoholic beverages also.

  • I cook unless you include pizza under catering. The next big thing I'm doing is DH's diaper party, I feel bad that our mom's are doing everything for my shower, so I told them I'd cook for his party. I'm taking Thanksgiving and Christmas off. I usually cook for a bunch of people on those holidays and this year I'm going to be too pregnant.

I love cooking, it's therapeutic for me. I'll spend hours preparing stuff for a small gathering of friends to play cards.

  • I picked that I cook, but really I meant that DH usually cooks.

  • I picked potluck. That is how DH's family works so for like Ava Nichol's bday party I asked various family members to bring specific things.

The Halloween party we are having though I will be making all the snacks.

I think it would be awesome to do a catered bday party for DD like I am thinking a cowgirl party for her 2 and bday and if I could have this BBQ place cater that would be Awesome!

  • Thanks ladies. I'm planning on cooking for DD's party and ordering some pizza. Last year we had it catered but we had a lot of people. I just wish I was more confident in my hosting/cooking abilities.

  • Exactly what brij said for me.

If it's a large group I rely heavily on finger foods and dips. Perfect because they are usually inexpensive and offer a lot of variety.

  • It all depends. For birthday parties and Cora's baptism, we do a mix of cooking and catering. For things like our Halloween party, we do potluck. DH's family always does potluck because there are about 30 immediate family members, so it's not fair for one person to do all of the cooking at once.

  • It depends on the size of the party. I usually cook but if it was going to be 30+ people I would cater at least a portion of it.

  • we cook! I come from a very large italian family and cooking is how its done.

my MIL does get things catered, and to me the party never seems to be quite as much fun or filled with love.

something about cooking just makes a party for me.
