Flavorwire's list of top 50 scariest books

I am still sorting through their list but I can't ignore their #1 pick.

TBH, I didn't find it that scary either. Creepy in some parts, yes. But this book didn't keep me up at night.

  • Ok, I've seen this multiple times and I have no idea what it means- TBH, what is that short for?

  • I think that is a pretty cool list and I am kind of surprised that I read a few of them.  I didn't find any of the ones I read to be "jump out at you and make you pee yourself scary" but what makes them scary is the idea of them.

The Girl Next Door by Jack Ketchum was just all kinds of wrong and twisted in a "how much do you actually know about your neighbors" kind of way.

I am a little surprised that The Beetle by Richard March didn't make that list.  I thought that book was kind of creepy.

I will be adding a lot of those to me TBR list.

  • OK- honestly- I don't find anything really scary I guess (though I imagine reading about a child abduction might scare me now)
I think what I love so much about IT is it plays on old fears you had as a kid. So the reason I PPH it so much is it makes me feel nostalgic for the times when I was little where I didn't want to go in my cellar (TBH I still hate going down there- my mom's cellar is creepy as shit)

So, no. I can't say IT is scary but it knows how to toy with your fears. Does that make sense?

  • Am I weird if none of the books on this list (that I have read) have scared me? The Exorcist, Silence of the Lambs, Rosemary's Baby, Ghost Story...All good, but not scary to me at all. Is suspense considered horror now? Because that's how I would classify a lot of these books.
  • Amityville Horror was the first book to give me a nightmare, but only because I thought it was a true story.

I was wondering the same thing! I read a lot of suspense. Intensity by Dean Koontz actually did scare me but it was more suspenseful than horror.
