mom failure of the day

I just remembered now that today was school picture day. We got a note friday, and I even mentioned it last night. Totally forgot when Jackson was getting ready this morning and asked to wear his Mario Brothers shirt. Dang it!

Anyone else forget something "important" this week?

Re: mom failure of the day

  • Enrollment paperwork for new daycare we started yesterday.  Had to turn around once I was 3/4 of the way there.  Whoops.
  • I almost forgot to take EJ on a walk last night to collect between 5-10 leaves for something at school. SO we were out at dusk trying to find some to take in. This is somewhat ironic because my yard is full of leaves. But most of them are oak and boring brown ones. So we needed to go on a walk to get some more fun varieties. I feel like I am doing ok in this whole "extra stuff for K" business, but I am just waiting for the day it all falls apart and I drown in handouts.
  • Remembered this morning on my way out the door that it's library day at school; spent 10 minutes running around trying to collect the 3 books that Jake checked out last week so that he would be able to get new ones today.  I know I could have just told Brian to do it (Jake was still sleeping, so I couldn't make him do it) but the control freak in me felt better knowing that it was done before I left the house so that I wouldn't have to worry about it.

On a related note...why oh why are the "special" days at school (gym, art, music, library, computer) on a 5 day rotation so that they fall on the same day every week, rather than a 6 day??  drives me crazy!!

Ours are on a 6 day schedule too. it drives me crazy!! One of the parents in Jackson's class this year created a google calendar for them, so that helps me some. They only get library once a month though--the poor city has one librarian for every 5 or 6 schools, so she only comes one day a week. They read books in class, but only occasionally get actual library class (and as a kid, library and art were my favorite specials, so it kills me he doesn't get more of it)

  • 6 day rotation!?! That would push me over the edge. EJ's goes Computer, Gym, Health (?), and two days of library. The second library day is when her book goes back. and I am grateful she is only allowed to check out one book at a time. Cause between her own books, and the community library books, and school library books. That is a lot of books.

Our gym is on a 6 day schedule too which I found odd! It doesn't really affect us though. She is supposed to wear sneakers everyday so at least I don't need to know when gym is.

Oh and I am scrambling for library book on Fridays too! At least it is the same day every week. But I hate keeping track!!

  • My bad mom moment last week. I think I posted on one of the threads last week about it.

Dd hasn't had homework but we were told a while ago it would start in October. I assumed we would get a heads up. So the 1 night I forget to check dd's folder and it was homework night! Thankfully I remembered after she went to bed. So we had to make sure she did it in the morning. Ugh!

Then last night I was all flipping out because I didn't see homework in her folder until I realized that homework was Wednesday night and yesterday was actually Tuesday!!

Oh and I somehow lost picture day order form. I purposefully set it out so I could do it and last night couldn't find it (picture day is today). Thank goodness they sent home a reminder with the website info so I just ordered online.

I swear school makes me feel like the most disorganized parent!

  • I found the six day schedule annoying, too. Especially when H would ask me every morning to wear a dress and then I had to figure out if it was a gym day...

This year has been easier to keep track of since she gets her homework packet on day 1 and it is due on day 6. I like that it isn't always due on the same day. Last year she got it Monday and it was due Friday, adding stress to Thursday night each week.

Our only recent parenting fail was letting Todd play with many varieties of caterpillars while we were camping over the weekend. He woke up on Monday with swollen hands and red bumps all over his arms. Oops. Pedi visit Monday afternoon and Zyrtec for a week to clear it up...

I wanted to add on this that after almost missing homework last week I was super prepared to have her do it last night. And there was no homework in her folder!!

Now I have no idea if she really didnt have any or if dd somehow lost it??? It's supposed to be every Wednesday. Ugh this school stuff is driving me crazy. I dojt get much info from dd so its hard to really get info!

I hope she didnt have any and I didn't just have a big mom failure...although not much I can do!

  • Perhaps my mom fail is that I'm not sure what kind of rotation the specials are on.  I know that it's not the same each week, but other than that, I have no idea.   The teacher does send home a calendar, but I don't pay much attention to it.  He wears sneakers every day and I try to make him put his library book back in his backpack every day if he takes it out - so I feel like it's one less thing I should try to remember.   And it's something I ask him when I ask him about his day. It's like pulling teeth to get him to tell me anything at all, so at least that I know I'll get a one word answer for!

Amber, Jackson is the same way. He's 5, and already it's a battle to get him to share anything about school. I still laugh about last year. They had a mom come in and give them a full belly dancing lesson--they got to use fans, silks, etc. Definitely not a normal day in any way. I ask him about his day, he says "fine." The next day the weekly newsletter comes home and they included a photo of his class belly dancing, so I asked him about it. He still says nothing. I talk to the mom who taught the lesson and she tells me how he loved it, was super into the silks etc.

It's maddening. He's just like Steve. We went away with friends this summer. I see the wife, and she looks like she may be pregnant, but I'm not sure, so I don't want to say anything. I corner Steve later and ask. He's known for months and didn't think to share it. Unless I ask him something like, "so, has Ms. X mentioned recently that she broke a skydiving world record?" he would never say anything, even if he knew about it.

  • Oh yeah my kid won't talk about her day either! I swear she's like a moody teenager already!!

Also adding in from my post yesterday so homework was sent home last night. So when the teacher says every Wednesday but week 2 its on a Thursday!
