Trouble w/ choosing a name.

My DH and I cannot agree on a name. He loves, and is set on, Katherine. Yes, it is a pretty name, but it's not the right name for my daughter. He's always asking me, "Do you like Katherine yet?" He doesn't get it. He's come up with a few names that I like, one being Olivia, which I adore! But now he says he doesn't like that name ::facepalm:: And of course he doesn't like names I've crossed by him. This guy is being so stubborn. Any advice on what I can do to make him be more open to other names, so that we can move on from one that will never happen? This shouldn't be this stressful.

Waiting on my baby girl <3 EDD 2/5/14

Re: Trouble w/ choosing a name.

  • Good luck. We actually argued about a few names and looked at eachother like the other one was from another planet a few times with DS. The way we found our name and stuck with it is a funny story for another day.

With this one we have not touched names yet.

  • I really like Olivia. I hope he goes back to that. Dh and I couldn't agree on a girl name with the first babe (we were team green) but I would just bounce things off of him and he'd do the same until one day one name just stuck. just keep bouncing things off each other.

we're currently stuck on the middle name so we're doing the bounce game again.

I like Katherine but I am biased ;)

  • Maybe have each of you make a list of your top 5 names, then show them to each other. Narrow it down from that.

    Good luck.

Also, have you thought about having 2 names picked out, but choosing the name when she comes out?  To see if she's more of a Katherine or Olivia?

  • @brij2006 That's not a bad idea, I don't know if that will help his stubbornness though. He may still choose his name only because it's what he wants, lol. I'll think about running that by him anyway.

  • @vitan The bounce game would be so much more interesting if he would actually be serious about other names he's bouncing. He's coming up with the most hideous names for me to choose Katherine, which is so not the point because I told him I'm not choosing Katherine because I don't like it. It's the fact that it doesn't feel right to me.

  • I told my H the other day that if he doesn't start offering suggestions and stop yelling at me for asking about names that I'd pull the, "I just had a baby and I'll write whatever I want to on the birth certificate" card. I am not a big fan of trying to agree on a name.

This makes me laugh because I actually told my ex if he was going to be so ridiculous that he could stay home when I went to the hospital to deliver. Reason 5,108,477 why's he's an ex. lol

  • we had agreed on a boy name and only half agreed on a girl name. I guess we got lucky :-)

just start looking at websites and suggesting names.

I would also have a serious conversation (sit in a quiet spot, look him in the eye) and tell him you don't like Katherine, it isn't going to work, you need to find a name you can both live with.

  • We would have had a really really hard time agreeing on a girl name. DH vetod my first choice for a boy name but we were able to agree on a short list. He had no preference of those so I picked.

I could hold you for a million years
To make you feel my love.
  • I got lucky that DH really liked Adalyn right off the bat. We just had to bounce around middle names until we found the one we wanted.

I hope your DH will move past Katherie so you both can find a name you like. I would suggest getting a name book and just going through it. That's how we found DDs middle name.

We were on a train in Europe when I was pregnant with DS, so we looked at a name app and made a list of names we both liked. Then we chose from there. I had a hard time settling on a girl name, but that didn't matter since we had a boy.

This time, we did the same thing. Well, minus being on a train in Europe.

We have chosen to use family names as MN (DS' is my grandma's maiden name and it's so awesome; this baby's MN will be DH's grandma's maiden name), but maybe you two could compromise and use each of your names as your daughter's name?
