pumping at work question

do u think this is ok?- i pump at 10am then put the bottles into the refrigerator.  i take them back out at 2pm and pump into them again. then i put them back into the refrigerator.

do u think that's ok?  i ask because it sort of seems like i'm 're-heating' the 10am milk with the new milk and i don't know if that's a good idea....to reheat and then refrigerate again?  if this isn't a good idea i could just put all the 10am pumped milk into 1 bottle and do the same with a different bottle for the 2pm pumped milk.

Re: pumping at work question

  • I never mixed fresh/cold milk, for the reasons you said (I have no idea if my hesitation to do that is actually founded or not, but I was always paranoid!)

  • i had pumped into cold milk before. I would also leave milk at room temp for a while and pump into the bottles again. I was lawless!  I wish I could site some legit resources, but it has been so long ago since me and the pump were intimate.
  • I never mixed cold and fresh milk.  I don't know if you really shouldn't, but it just felt "wrong" to me.
  • I did do your 2nd idea; if I'm remembering correctly, I would pump directly into a Dr. Brown's bottle on one side, and a storage bottle on the other side.  I would take the storage bottle milk and fill up the Dr. Brown's bottle with however much more I needed to make that a full bottle, that way I could cap it and it would be ready to go the next day.  I did the same thing with the afternoon pumping session, so I would normally have 2 full bottles ready to go the next day.

I despised preparing bottles at night, so I would do anything I could do get some of it done during the day at work instead! :)

  • Well it's been a long time, but from what I remember...I always thought you can't mix fresh and refrigerated milk.  But I think you can leave fresh bm out at room temperature for something like 5 hours.  So maybe you could just leave the 10 am bottle out, then combine it with the 2pm milk then refrigerate?

  • I've done it, and I don't see the big deal really.

    Here's info from Medela though:

    http://www.medelabreastfeedingus.com/tips-and-solutions/11/collection-and-storage-of-breastmilk

You can continue to add small amounts of cooled breastmilk to the same refrigerated container throughout the day. Avoid adding warm milk to already cooled milk.Pumped milk may be added to frozen milk provided it is first chilled and the quantity is less than what is frozen.

  • I generally wouldn't mix the two, because of the reasons you stated, but I did a few times when I didn't bring enough bottles or bags and nothing bad happened. :-)

I would also sometimes leave my pumped milk at room temp until the next pumping session

  • thanks ladies! i was trying to save time by avoiding the need to wash 1 more thing.  i just got back to work so i'm trying to get back into the swing of things. i had only 2 bottles the other day so i came up with this idea but realized it didn't seem right that the newly pumped milk was warming the cold milk. seemed problematic.  glad i asked!
  • I used playtex drop ins.  I had a converter thing that allowed me to pump and store in the liners.  I didn't really like pumping into the liners, so I'd pump into the bottles and then dump into the liners (or bags).  Then I would store the empty, unwashed bottles in the fridge and use them at the next pumping session.  So I only had to wash 2 bottles and the pump parts per day.

  • I would take three bottles with me.  Once I pumped I would combine that into one bottle and refrigerate, and rinse the other one.  (If I didn't do a full wash I would put that into the fridge, too.)  The next time I would pump into the rinsed bottle and a new one.  So, at least it was one less thing to wash!

I think this is similar to what I would do except I brought 4 bottles when pumping 3 times a day.

Pump in 2, combine. I would put used empty bottle in with freezer pack. Pump with used empty bottle and new bottle. Combine. So now I had 2 milk bottles and 1 empty used bottle and a new one. Last pump I would use the empty used and new one.

I pumped in the medela bottles but used playtex dropins or stored in freezer bags so I had to prepare seperately once at home

I never pumped into bottles that already had milk in them. Mainly because I preferred starting with an empty bottle that had less weight to it. And I would fear spilling already pumped milk while trying to attach to the pump. So once pumped it was combined and stored and I did not want to mess with it for fear of spilling it!!

  • I always add fresh milk to cold milk. never thought a thing of it. huh.

I also don't pump at work at all.

I pump in the morning and leave a fresh bottle out by the bed for DH for the first morning feeding if I am not nursing at the same time- (hes not on a solid schedule yet =( ) I put the extra in a drop in liner with a storage lid.  Then I pump when I get home. I get 2- 3 bottles for the next day that I put in the drop in things. If there is a partial from an earlier feeding I will add to it. I have even added milk from the next day to complete a bottle.I just make sure that gets used first.

I don't however add fresh to frozen.

Goodness I wish I had your supply. I'm lucky if I get enough for one bottle.
