First Ultrasound

First, thanks everyone for asking about me yesterday, it made me smile to see it today!

Next, my scanner is not working so I was not able to add the picture.

And last, my ultrasound was not fun at all. When they first take me back they tell my mom to wait, they're going to measure then they will bring her back. I had a student, which I didn't mind at all. They did an ultrasound on my skin (I can't think of the name) first. All the pressure she put on me was horrible, I had to pee! She looked for a while then said she needed to ask the tech a question. She goes and gets the tech. The tech watches the student for a few minutes then tells her to let her try. By this point, I'm wondering what the heck, look at the clock and realize it's already been half an hour. The tech ask if my last period really was August 10th and I told her yes, I'd been keeping track of them, why what is going on? She said nothing was wrong, the baby doesn't measure that far along. She wants to try a trans vaginal to see if they can get a heartbeat, then they'll let my mom in.

Another half an hour later (so my mom was in the waiting room an hour), they finally let my mom in. Although they could see the heartbeat, they couldn't get a measure on it because the heartbeat was so small. According to the tech, between baby and sack, I measured 6 weeks 1 day yesterday.

According to the tech, they will probably order another ultrasound in 2 weeks so they can get actual measurements. Sadly, since it was a Friday I will have no answers till Monday. Obviously I didn't ovulate when they thought I did which I know isn't un-normal, but they seemed surprised by it. What I really don't understand is, that means the day I got my BFP, I was 1 week along! I've never heard of anyone getting a positive from home that quickly.

We'll see what happens Monday.

  • That's great that they could at least see the heartbeat, but all the rest sounds like it would bum me out too. I'm sorry and I hope next visit goes well!

  • I was charting and knew when I o'd, but at my first appt when I was 7w0d baby was only measuring 6w1d. Two weeks later, at my 9w appt I measured 8w5d, and at my 13w I was exactly on. Sometimes when the babies are that little it can be hard to get exact measurements. I wouldn't worry unless they tell you to! You could see a heartbeat so your little bean IS growing. Try not to worry and I'm sure things will be better at your next appointment!

  • I'm sorry! I have had great techs and pretty awful ones. I always roll my eyes when I get called back by a certain one in my office. My 1st scan at my MFMs (I had already had 2 at RE where we saw heartbeats and measured the babies exactly at the time of my IUI).

Anyways, the first tech at the MFM could not grasp the concept that my LMP had no affect on babies' measurements since I had an IUI (thus we knew exact date of conception.) I had to explain it to her, she had to go get the doctor. Thank goodness I never saw her again!

A heartbeat is great - as long as you saw it - all is good!

  • First, a heartbeat is a great sign! Hold on to that until you get more answers.

Babies can measure behind at first. They can be slow growers, dates can be off etc.

I never gave them my LMP. It would have put me two weeks further than I was. I knew when I ovulated and always gave my EDD instead or made
up an LMP that worked (at the suggestion of my midwife) since most are calculated by a 28 cycle and CD14 O... Neither of which is true for me.
Congrats to my TTC buddy Madeline! Cheering for all the strong 3T ladies!

  • Sounds like you had a stupid tech but overall a fine ultrasound. Heartbeats are fantastic and I wouldn't worry too much between ultrasounds.

I have a follow up u/s on Tuesday because the tech who did my anatomy scan last month was too dumb to know she needed pics of the baby's face and profile. I got a cd of pictures of organs. Awesome. I feel your pain of incompetent techs.

Oh, and I also only tell the office when I O'd. I'm lucky to have only dealt with people who accepted that I knew what I was talking about and didn't demand my LMP.

  • Did they end up doing a transvaginal? A transabdominal is not usually used for that early. All of my scans up until 11 weeks were TV. What were you supposed to be measuring? I would assume your doctor will probably want a growth u/s in a week.

I'm sorry it didn't go as planned. I hope it works itself out!

  • I agree with pb&fluff. it just sounds like the whole experience was backwards but then again it was a student, they're learning. and your poor mom was probably getting anxious waiting. I hope you have a better experience next time and more accurate results. congrats on the HB!

  • I didn't understand why they tried transabdominal (thank you pb&fluff) from the beginning, I was told it would be transvaginal.

The whole experience scared me because of the techs not being the greatness, but I'm not worried about the baby. I was happy to get to see the heartbeat. I just wish they had fill me and my mom in a bit more rather than waiting.

I'm surprised that it seems to shock everyone that someone could O on a different day than CD14.

Yes @pb&fluff they did the transvaginal after not being able to get the heart beat from transabdominal.

I hope I get a different tech next time, just have to wait till my ob's office contacts me to set up a different one.

  • Seeing a heartbeat is a good thing! My First U/S we didn't see a heartbeat and barely saw anything. When we went back for our second U/S we saw and heard a glorious heartbeat. RE said I was measuring a little smaller, but he isn't concerned. I go back on Tuesday for a third U/S. I hope your next U/S is as reassuring at mine was.

  • That sounds very similar to my appointment last week. My last period was August 14th, so according to the doctors, I was 8 weeks pregnant. However, I know for a fact that I ovulated on CD 29, so that puts me only at 6 weeks pregnant last week. I discussed this with my doctor when we sat down in her office before they did the scan and we discussed when I got my bfp and that my dates make more sense with when I got a positive test. They did a transvaginal ultrasound and we could barely see the heartbeat, so they are sending me to the awesome machine next week for a dating ultrasound to get an accurate due date from the sonographer.

I am surprised they tried to do an abdominal ultrasound, though. I thought the baby doesn't come up past the pelvic bone until after 12 weeks or something.

  • well that U/S tech sounds like they didn't know what they were doing! of course you needed a transvaginal U/S.

I am very happy for you that they were able to see the heartbeat though!! its so excited, right?!!

  • Doctors office called and said they're going to order another ultrasound next week so they can get the heartbeat. It's setup for Oct 24th at 1pm. I know my mom is going with me again, I need to see if H is going to be off or not. I also see the doctor for the first time (I usually see the NP) for the first time that afternoon. This time I'm not going back there without my mom, there's nothing she's going to see she hasn't seen before.
