STM advice

How did it work getting pregnant with #2? We've always wanted kids to be close in age. I'm hoping we can have a second child...and hoping they are close in age. I needed clomid/progesterone to get pregnant successfully with G. If you had a similar plan, how did your Dr work it for #2? Did you have to try naturally again for awhile before your Dr did any intervention?

  • Thank you! I stopped pumping about 1-2 months before I got pregnant with number 2.

  • I don't have any experience with clomid or progesterone but in regards to BFing, I got my period about 7 months after my daughter was born. However, I didn't get pregnant until 4 months after I weaned. I was charting and while my cycles were wonky, we were able to be careful around my fertile days. I believe it can be done but it's a slippery rope if you BF while pregnant. My sil never got her period but did get pregnant while BFing. Unfortunately, she miscarried, which makes me skeptical of the nursing while pregnant.

@vitan, as far as I know miscarriage and nursing aren't related. I know many, many people who successfully get pregnant while nursing. Miscarriage happens for many reasons, but nursing isn't one of them.

For me, it took us a year to conceive DS due to long annovulatory cycles (60-90 day cycles). I nursed for 14 months, and got my period back at 9 months post partum and was super regular comparatively (cycles between 30-39 days) even while nursing for another 5 months. I conceived number 2 only three months after weaning.

Hopefully it is an easier road for you this time, but maybe you should talk to your doc about progesterone now so you're prepared if you do get pregnant without clomid. Good luck TTC!

  • @lindsayandjamie I know that sounded a bit naive but let me add that she got pregnant again and was still nursing. She had her progesterone levels checked and they were very low so she was put on supplements. When doing research there were articles saying that the two could be correlated. Not saying they are but for me, I would be more cautious.

  • It took 2 years to conceive my little one- I got my first PP period when he was 4 months old (I was EBF) and I still nurse him every 3 hours during the day. I accidentally got pregnant back in May and I miscarried (not related to nursing- it was a mix of my PCOS and the related complications) We have now been actively NNT for a couple months but my cycles are not behaving normally. I'm going to go back in to my OB (if he can ever fit me in) and try and see about getting metformin again and see what they think we can do. I am unwilling to try for a year before seeking help. I don't have that kind of time with DH's deployment schedule AND I know there is something wrong with my body.

I hope your Dr's are helpful and you get that second baby without to much trouble <3

  • No advice but I am EBF and got my period at 11 weeks pp. My sister told me yesterday that she didnt get her period till 8 months pp, nursed her oldest till he was one and had her 2nd when her first was 18 months. So basically she got pregnant her first cycle pp while nursing.

  • No personal experience but there are lots of women who have successfully gotten pregnant while BFing and continued to tandem feed afterwards. I know one woman in particular who had kids very close together and did extended BFing and I believe was feeding 3 at one point.

  • I know several women who became pregnant while nursing, but in each case their mill supply tanked. If BF is important to you that might be one thing to consider.

  • We NNT when Cora was 5 months old, but I had not had a period yet. We continued to NNT until she was 11 months old, when my period came back. I started charting right away and I had a "normal" length cycle (for me). The second cycle, I ovulated on day 29, so I'm very glad I was charting, because we ended up getting pregnant and I would have just expected AF anyday.

Also, getting your cycles back is different for everyone. One SIL ebf her daughter, and got her period back at 6 weeks pp. My other SIL is still bfing her 22 month old and I believe she hasn't gotten her period back yet, even though she is only nursing him sporadically.

I was only nursing once a day at 11 months pp when I got my period back, but my crazy long cycle when I got pregnant was the cycle directly after I weaned completely.
