Starting to get really overwhelmed.

I spent an hour or so going through all of the lists and things we need or are recommended for baby - and am so overwhelmed!  I don't know where to start, and part of me doesn't want to start until I feel baby kick or move.  Aside from what we actually DO need, though, there are just so many options for everything, and I just don't know where to get a foothold, so to speak.  How/where did you all get started figuring everything out, other than reading online?

  • You dont have a ticker. How far along are you?  I am just now getting started good, granted we are not having  nursery because we live in a 1br apt. We are just taking our time and getting organized. I am waiting to buy stuff until after my shower this coming weekend. Just relax and enjoy being pregnant. And dont read too much online, lol it can kind of make you spazzy.

  • The baby bargains book was so so helpful. I highly recommend getting it. They break everything down by category and then grade it and take price into account which is nice.

  • Your aren't alone in this. I've been researching carseats and strollers only, and have been very overwhelmed.

  • I literally just went to BRU and walked around and talk to friends with kids.

I looked at the Baby Bargains book for about 10 mins... IMO it just scared me with a lot of things and was very overwhelming to look at.

  • I have been asking every recent mom I know and asking moms on here (and the multiples board) what I need to have, what's nice to have and what features/brands are best. I'm starting with the big stuff (strollers, car seats, cribs etc.) and I'll work my way down. I like to do research on EVERYTHING so I wanted plenty of time and started early. We haven't actually bought anything yet.

I second this. after I read her recommendations, I felt at ease and went with it. Just breathe and don't get too caught up with the little things. You need a place for the baby to sleep, ride in the car, transport outside the car. The rest will come when your babe tells you. Trust me, we went through tons of pacifiers, bottles and diapers until we found what she liked. Just take little by little and read what you can. Good luck!

  • Another vote for baby bargains. Just take one category at a time. Decide on the crib and then move on to the stroller and then the car seat... It might take you a couple if days for one category. Be patient with yourself.

  • Love Lucie's List and Baby Bargains!! After being at this parenting thing for a few months I've learned that I didn't need/use a whole bunch of the crap I had. Focus on the big things like a carseat and place to sleep. You'll continue to learn what works for you and baby as you go.

  • I found the recommendations on Lucie's list to be really helpful. For furniture you might want to check Baby Bargains.

Thankfully you don't really NEED all that much to take care of a newborn and you can always run out and buy anything you don't have (or order it online more likely!)

Early on the Rock N Play, wrap carrier (I had a Boba Wrap which I personally loved), white noise machine, sleep n plays, diapers, burp clothes, swaddle blankets, bottles, pacifiers and breast feeding supplies were key. I also preferred an infant car seat early on and since it was winter I used a car seat cover that goes over the top like a shower cap. You might want to have some baby shampoo/wash on hand and a baby bath of some type.

IMO buy a couple bottles and a couple pacifiers until you know which your baby will prefer.

I could hold you for a million years
To make you feel my love.
  • I second the minimalist approach to baby gear. You NEED a carseat - you can't leave the hospital without one. You need diapers (cloth or disposable), clothes, and the cheepy baby blankets (can be used for swaddling, as burp cloths, under baby when changing, etc).

I think a bouncy seat, a pack n play, and a wrap carrier are invaluable in the beginning but the rest you can buy after baby is here if need be. Don't get overwhelmed, just go item by item.

FWIW, We didn't get a travel system because we wanted a jogging stroller and bought a snap and go stroller - so those are things worth considering. My advice is keep the receipts :)

  • Items I found useful:
Sleep and plays- huge hassle to put clothes over baby's head so she lived in these until she was about 2 months.
Infant carrier- easy to lug her around and take in and out of places. You don't wake a sleeping baby.
Rock N Play- fantastic to lay her down when sleeping or if I needed to pee/shower.
Swing- One of the few places she could fall asleep for a nap
Moby wrap- loved to wear her around. I wish I had this sooner than I did.
Dr. Brown's bottles- BF sucked for us and we needed to feed her. These limited the amount of air into her bottle so it was easier on her tummy. We tried Tommee Tippee and they just didn't work as well for us.
Tommee Tippee Powder Dispenser- Genius. Individual powder containers that we used for travel or MITN feedings. All measured out and no thinking involved at 3AM.
Munchkin Waterproof changing pad liner- easy to toss into the washer
Pack N Play- My Dr. was adamant that she shouldn't sleep in the Rock N Play but I wanted her in our bedroom at night so we used the Pack N Play until she was about 5.5 months.
    Diaper Bag
City Mini GT Stroller- So insanely in love with this stroller. We purchased the clip in piece for the car seat and it was amazing.
Carseat Canopy-Very handy to keep LO sleeping or to just cover her from others if needed.

If I think of anything else I'll add more :)
