holiday shopping poll

1. How early do you start thinking about holiday shopping?  I just started making my lists.  Mainly so I can budget but also to grab things as I see/think of them. Normally, I try to be done by the beginning of December.  But since having a kid, I'm usually going right up until a few days before.

2. How many folks do you buy for? My list fluctuates every year.  I usually have my nieces and nephews, MIL & her bf, GMIL and a few friends' kids.  For my immediate family, depending upon how much extended family celebrates with us, we do a pick 'em Pollyanna or a white elephant if there are more people

3. Do you tend to buy more gift cards or actual presents?  I try for actual presents, but sometimes GCs can't be helped!

4. Who is your nightmare to buy for?  Mine is my DH, because he buys what he needs or wants pretty much the moment he decides he wants or needs it.  Runner up is my dad, because he typically wants for nothing and gives you no information lol.

5. Who is your easy gift?  Mine is MIL because we always get her a restaurant GC.  She and her bf like trying different places so it's easy for us.

Re: holiday shopping poll

  • 1.  I usually start early to mid November.  October is 'birthday month' around here (Hunter, three nieces, a nephew, husband and brother all in one month!) so I like to get past all the birthdays, and let the parents evaluate what the kinds needs.  Early November is the parents and such-- mid November are the kids.

    2. We buy for our five nephews and three nieces, two of our neighborhood friends kids, my mom and dad, his mom and dad, his grandmother, Hunter, and that's about it.  We don't purchase individual gifts for each other-- we usually buy something for both of us, or the house.  Like last year it was a couch.  Next year will (hopefully) be a new bed.

    3.  For Christmas, I really try for actual gifts.  Birthdays I will do gift cards, but I like tangible gifts for Christmas.

    4. My father-in-law is SUCH a pain in the ass to buy for.  He doesn't want anything, he won't use gift cards for clothes or eating out or anything that would require him to leave the house.

    5. My dad.  All my brothers and their wives and I all put in for my dad to get season tickets for the Trenton Thunder.

  • 1. I do most of my shopping on Cyber Monday, and then run out as needed during the next couple of weeks after work. I avoid weekend shopping like the plague until mid-January.

    2. We buy for 8 neices & nephews, and we both do pollyannas with the adults in our families.  We splurge on each other, but I'm sure that'll change once we finally have kids. I also make cookie trays for our bosses.

    3. Presents!  I hate buying  gift cards unless it's an actual must.

    4. J is tricky to shop for. He tends to buy what he needs, not leaving me too many options aside from clothes.  And he's at the point where he think he has enough clothes...

    5. My sister's kids.  I pick them up clothes.  I loves shopping for clothes, especially little kids.

  • 1. How early do you start thinking about holiday shopping?  I try to do it all year, but really got moving this past month.  It seems all the b-days are from August thorugh November, and then bam Christmas hits.

    2. How many folks do you buy for?  My parents, his parents, 15 nieces/nephews, my god-daughter (friend's child), my god son (friend's child), my boss, husband, misc people (hair dresser, trash man etc), random pollyanna or two, the women who work for husband at his practice,  his cousin, one of my sisters (b/c she hosts 50 people on Christmas day for a sit down dinner, and I feel she deserves a little something), and his brother/sister-in-law.  I think that is everyone.

    3. Do you tend to buy more gift cards or actual presents?  I try for actual presents, but sometimes GCs can't be helped!  Some of the nieces/nephews are getting harder to buy for.  Last year, I did movie tickets with a little snack pack.  That actually went over well!  We also always do gc's for his parents.  They are elderly, but still get out for breakfast and dinner on the week ends.  I always stock up on hostess gifts after Christmas, it helps cut down on running around looking for something and saves some money.

    4. Who is your nightmare to buy for?  My husband.  He wants for nothing, and it is so hard to surprise him with anything.  I suggested no gifts, but he doesn't like that idea.  I also suggested we each have x amount of dollars, and we go shopping together.  We can buy whatever we like as a mini shopping spree. That was a no go too!  My dad is a close second on being tough to buy for!

    5. Who is your easy gift?  My god daughter and god son b/c they are still little.  They are fun to buy for, and their Mom's and I have similar tastes....must be why they are two of my best friends :)

  • 1. I typically start once September hits- like I'm not actively out or online with the sole purpose of Christmas shopping, but if I see stuff, I will grab it and put it away.  So far, I am just about finished DD, and got something for my grandmom.

    2. I (well, Santa) buy for my two kids, and the dogs get stockings.  DH and I do not exchange anything big, but because DD realized that Santa should bring something for everyone, we decided to get a couple of small things for show.  I buy for my parents too, and contribute to a group gift for our boss at work.  Last year my siblings and I decided to do a day of volunteer work together instead of exchanging- not sure if we will do that again or what.  We do a pollyanna with my aunts and uncles on my mom's side, and I buy for my two grandmoms and one great-aunt.  Usually get something for two of my aunts on my dad's side too but that varies by year.  DH is in charge of his family- that changes year to year too between pollyannas, deciding on a night out instead of exchanging, etc.  Guess we should talk about that soon...

    3. I tend to get more physical gifts, but if people really want gift cards or would be able to use them moreso than a physical thing, I respect that.  I'd rather get them a gift card they will use than junk just for the sake of giving them a 'thing' that will sit in a closet.

    4. Believe it or not, my son is the hardest one for me!  We have a ton of toys between what we kept from DD being little, plus his recent birthday.  He needs no clothes- I have the next two sizes already stocked up for him in drawers...but I need some things for "Santa" to leave!

    5. My daughter is so, so easy.  She's 3 and into a lot of things- so it's so easy to do!

    1. How early do you start thinking about holiday shopping? Pretty much as soon as August ends. I've already finished for some of the people on the list. My nephews bday is a few days before Christmas and my niece is early January so they are done because they require two things.

    2. How many folks do you buy for? The Dude, our 4 nieces/nephews, one of his siblings (we pick names out of a hat), my mom and sometimes his parents if we're getting along and speaking to them - awkward! And of course this year - our children.

    3. Do you tend to buy more gift cards or actual presents? Actual gifts.

    4. Who is your nightmare to buy for?  The Dude because he buys what he wants through out the year when he wants it. Also his parents because of obvious reasons

    5. Who is your easy gift?  The kids because they all have things they're into like Dora, Thomas, etc.

  • 1. How early do you start thinking about holiday shopping?  I started thinking... haven't started shopping yet!

    2. How many folks do you buy for? we are cutting down on the number of adults and doing a pollyanna this year.  It used to be way too many and we were all spending a fortune.  This year it should just be parents, nephews and niece, and my brother and his girlfriend (no kids), each other and our son and my grandparents. Ok that is still a lot.

    3. Do you tend to buy more gift cards or actual presents?  presents for children, gift cards usually for adults

    4. Who is your nightmare to buy for?  husband - he always gets whatever he wants before I have a chance to and then my dad he always says he doesn't need anything.

    5. Who is your easy gift?  the kids... they are happy with anything!
