Maternity Leave

How does yours work? I'm really curious about this...

How long will you have off?

Do you get your full salary/pay or a percentage?

Does you husband have any time off?

Are you covered until FMLA or the Canadian equivalent? Sorry, I don't know what it's called!

Do you have to use any other kinds of time before your ML kicks in?

Re: Maternity Leave

  • How long will you have off?

I'll have 8 weeks off, but some of that will be unpaid.

Do you get your full salary/pay or a percentage?

    I'll receive 66 1/4% of my salary.

Does you husband have any time off?

Yes, he'll have up to 12 weeks at his full salary.

Are you covered until FMLA or the Canadian equivalent? Sorry, I don't know what it's called!
    Yes.

Do you have to use any other kinds of time before your ML kicks in?
I have to use any paid time off I have left, which won't be much because I accrue that based on the hours I worked. It works out to be roughly 6 hours every 2 weeks. Then, I have to go 20 hours unpaid before I can start using my leave time.

How long will you have off? 6 weeks

Do you get your full salary/pay or a percentage? Nope, nothing

Does you husband have any time off? We're not sure about his policy for work, but he's planning on looking into it and if he can't get paid, he'll use vacation time.

Are you covered until FMLA or the Canadian equivalent? Sorry, I don't know what it's called! Nope

Do you have to use any other kinds of time before your ML kicks in?  No, I'll have enough sick time and vacation time to cover all my leave. I'll have 1 day left when all is said and done. That's also if I don't use any of my time between now and then (it was going to be 2 days left, but I'm taking a sick day on the 24th for u/s and doctors appointment).

ETA: Actually after looking, it looks like my job has to give me 12 weeks, I'm going to have to talk to HR.

This is what I know of so far. I won't know exactly until my review in January.

How long will you have off? 6 weeks if I have to use all of my vacation time, and do not get paid my salary. If I end up getting the same deal as the other girl, then I will take 12 weeks.

Do you get your full salary/pay or a percentage? Full pay for my 4 weeks of vacation, then 0 pay after that.
If I get the same deal as the other girl, then I will get paid 100% for the 12 weeks.
Does you husband have any time off? He will get 1 week.
Are you covered until FMLA or the Canadian equivalent? Sorry, I don't know what it's called! Yes.
Do you have to use any other kinds of time before your ML kicks in? No.

  • I can take up to 12 weeks but only get paid for what I have accrued in vacation and sick leave. Other than that I get nothing but time off and the company's portion I insurance premium.

  • How long will you have off? I am taking until the end of the school year - so from March 31st until June 27th.

Do you get your full salary/pay or a percentage? I get paid my full salary for the first six weeks by using sick days, or eight if I have a c-section, then nothing.

Does you husband have any time off? One week paternity, and any vacation he chooses to use.

Are you covered until FMLA or the Canadian equivalent? Sorry, I don't know what it's called!  If I were a non-leave, I could take the remainder of the school and and TWO full additional years.  As a leave, I can take until the end of the year and then my contract expires.

Do you have to use any other kinds of time before your ML kicks in? I can use some of my sick days before baby but I need to leave enough for the 6 or 8 weeks of pay.

  • I got 4 weeks before the due date, and 12 weeks after the due date, all paid at 60% by the state of California under FMLA. Then my employer pays me whatever I accrued in EDL/PTO hours. For me that was somewhere around 90 hours, which is spread out to be paid the weeks I'm on leave.

  • I have no idea about any of this. I work for such a small company and i'm one of the only women, and the others are much older so i'm not sure they've ever had to put a plan in place.

It is a very family oriented company though so I know whatever I choose my boss will be understanding and accomodating.

what it will pay, if anything, I have no idea!

I should look into this but we don't have an HR department so if I want to know I have to go to the boss and i'm not ready to out myself to him yet. although he did know we were going through IVF so my getting pregnant won't be a shock to him.

  • How does yours work? I'm really curious about this...

How long will you have off? About 12 weeks

Do you get your full salary/pay or a percentage? Per FMLA, they are required to let you take 12 weeks of unpaid leave within the first year of giving birth.  My company allows you to substitute up to 6 weeks of sick leave for a vaginal birth (8 weeks for a C-section) and the rest of the time can be substituted with any vacation leave you may have earned.  Or you can just opt to take it as unpaid leave.

Does you husband have any time off? My H gets a week of paid paternity leave.  He then took two additional weeks of sick leave and the following two weeks he worked part time (M-W afternoon) and took the other days as sick leave.

Are you covered until FMLA or the Canadian equivalent? Sorry, I don't know what it's called!
    Yes.
Do you have to use any other kinds of time before your ML kicks in? No.  Though technically we don't get separate "ML" - just what FMLA covers as explained above.

    .image

  • I took 8 weeks. 6 was paid by using all of my sick and pto time. Two weeks were unpaid. I am protected by FMLA. My H got 4 weeks totally paid by.his company.

This is kind of how it is at my job.  It's a small company, with just three employees, so I don't really know what the policy is or even if I will get paid at all.

  • How does yours work? I'm really curious about this... I think I have 4 weeks prior to birth and 6 months after babies arrive in job security.  I get 6 weeks paid at 66% of my salary (base + on target commission) with no tax withdrawn and another 6 weeks at full salary but minus taxes.  The rest will be unpaid or I can use my sick/vacation time.  I'm not 100% sure about this but I know our plan is really good.

Does you husband have any time off? I think he will be able to take a week or two unpaid.

Are you covered until FMLA or the Canadian equivalent? Sorry, I don't know what it's called! Yes, I work for a huge company.

Do you have to use any other kinds of time before your ML kicks in? I have 30 days of sick/vacation time saved up, I will probably have another 2 weeks by the time I go out on ML.  I also just leave when I want and work from home sometimes.  I'm sure that will start happening a lot more when I get uncomfortable.  I don't do it much now.

  • How long will you have off? If I'm physically able to work until I go into labor (which often seems unlikely with the amount of time I have to be on my feet)...I will take 10 or 12 weeks depending on vaginal delivery vs c-section.

Do you get your full salary/pay or a percentage? I get my full salary for 6 or 8 weeks, depending on delivery. Then I will use all of the vacation time I'm allowed (3 weeks I have banked plus the 1 week of PTO I'm allowed to "borrow" in early 2014).

Does you husband have any time off? I don't know how much time he'll take. He is self-employed for one job and is a contractor at the other, so there is no one actually giving him benefits.

Are you covered until FMLA or the Canadian equivalent? Sorry, I don't know what it's called! Yes, FMLA. I could take 12 weeks off but it would be financially difficult.

Do you have to use any other kinds of time before your ML kicks in? Just 5 days out of my sick bank.

  • How does yours work? I'm really curious about this...

How long will you have off?

I am taking 4 months off. My work will give you up to 6 months if you want, but I don't have much paid time off, so I am taking 4 months.

Do you get your full salary/pay or a percentage?

I only get whatever time I have accrued (sick or vacation).

Does you husband have any time off?

He switched jobs only a few months before DS was born. They would have given him more, but he took two weeks. He didn't want to be gone from work longer than that. We also found out his boss is retiring this year (in December) so he feels like he really needs to be at work.

Are you covered until FMLA or the Canadian equivalent? Sorry, I don't know what it's called!

I am, yes. Washington State also has additional PG and Family Leave Laws.

Do you have to use any other kinds of time before your ML kicks in?

I could have perhaps (if I had been unable to work or something, but I didn't look into that).

How does yours work? I'm really curious about this...

I took off 1m prior and 6 wks post with DD but that was before they had "baby bonding". With DS I took 1m prior and 12 wks pp all paid. I could of asked for an additional 6 wks unpaid.

Do you get your full salary/pay or a percentage? Percentage of gross wages, but I don't recall what that percentage actually amounted to.

Does you husband have any time off? He's self employed. He doesn't work, he doesn't get paid.

Are you covered until FMLA or the Canadian equivalent? Sorry, I don't know what it's called! FMLA

Do you have to use any other kinds of time before your ML kicks in? The first 7 days is considered a waiting period before disability kicks in. With DS they paid me sick time or vacation time so that I would not have a week unpaid.

I'm in Canada and work for the federal government and have one of the best mat leave top ups in the country. I'll speak to my situation as well as someone with no top up. We all get 1 yr paid by Employment Insurance at 55% of your salary or a max of $825 every two weeks. I also get a top up from my employer for another 40%, for a total of 95% of my pay for the year. My husband gets not time off so took vacation time when our son was born. I don't have to use any other leave before ML kicks in but I used sick leave when I was put on bed rest with my son and started claiming mat leave 4 weeks before he was born. It is an absolute blessing to have this leave and full medical coverage but we pay crazy taxes to live here so it isn't exactly free.

  • How long will you have off? - I am taking 11 weeks.

Do you get your full salary/pay or a percentage? - 66% of my salary for 6 weeks for vaginal and 8 weeks for c-section.

Does you husband have any time off? - He will take a week off unpaid.

Are you covered until FMLA or the Canadian equivalent? - FMLA for 12 weeks per calendar year. I used 9 for my surgery and only have 3 left but obviously I won't be going back 3 weeks PP. My position will still be secured.

Do you have to use any other kinds of time before your ML kicks in? - I am using two weeks paid vacation time before my 6 or 8 weeks (depending on how birth goes) starts because our vacations don't roll over and they will expire in November anyway. So I will get paid for either 8 or 10 weeks of my 11 week leave.

  • How does yours work? I'm really curious about this...

How long will you have off? I had off 6 weeks on STD and another 4 week son top of that that I could take off in part-time increments until she's 6 months old

Do you get your full salary/pay or a percentage? I'm really lucky and my employer pays all 10 weeks 100% pay.

Does you husband have any time off? No, he doesn't get time off, but we were lucky and A was born two weeks before the semester started, so he was still home.

Are you covered until FMLA or the Canadian equivalent? Sorry, I don't know what it's called! Yes, I was covered under FMLA, but only 6 weeks of my leave counted towards it.

Do you have to use any other kinds of time before your ML kicks in? Nope, I still have all of my vacation time (I don't get sick time).

  • I'm in Canada

How long will you have off? I have 1 year off (I'm 9 mths in)

Do you get your full salary/pay or a percentage? I get 55% ($832 every 2 weeks)

Does you husband have any time off? He could have taken parental leave but it comes off my maternity leave so he didn't. He took a few days vacation

Are you covered until FMLA or the Canadian equivalent? Sorry, I don't know what it's called! Not sure what that means. If I go back I'm guaranteed a similar job at the same pay.

Do you have to use any other kinds of time before your ML kicks in? We get 52 weeks total the first 17 are pregnancy leave then the last 35 are parental leave. Anyone that has a child (father/mother/adoptive parents) can take parental leave but only a birth mother can take pregnancy leave.

We also get $100 a month for evey child under 6 from the govt for child care expenses.

  • I am a teacher. I get up to 6 weeks (vaginal) or 8 weeks (c-section) paid maternity leave, and I can take the remaining 6 or 4 weeks unpaid through FMLA.

However, if I want to have paid maternity leave, I have to use my sick days.

Since I'm due at the beginning of June, I will probably have to take 3-4 weeks of maternity leave, which I have the sick days for, and then I will continue to get paid throughout the summer as normal.

With Cora, I took 8 weeks paid (the first three were over the summer, so I didn't use sick days) and then 2 more unpaid for a total of 10 weeks.

  • I will answer for DS. I am currently on a year long LOA and plan to quit at the end, so no formal mat leave with this LO.

How long will you have off?
I planned to take up to 12 weeks, plus the summer. I ended up with 10 weeks because of when he was born. In total, I had 4.5 months off.

Do you get your full salary/pay or a percentage?

I had my full salary for 6 weeks and then unpaid for 4.

Does you husband have any time off?

He got 1 week, took a week of vacation and negotiated a third week. He just started a new job so I don't know how long he can take with this LO.

Are you covered until FMLA or the Canadian equivalent? Sorry, I don't know what it's called!

My paid leave ran concurrent with FMLA. The last 4 weeks of my leave were covered under FMLA.

Do you have to use any other kinds of time before your ML kicks in?

I had to use sick time for the first 6 weeks (I had over 8 saved up).
