Cutting back plants

Hey! I'm new to gardening, but my new house has beautiful landscaping. I'm hoping to not kill all the plants. Lol I have Black-eyed Susans and sage lining my walkway. When are you supposed to cut them back for winter? Is there anything I need to do to prepare them for winter/ colder weather? Thanks!

Leave the black eyed susans well into the fall. Birds eat the seeds! You can clip them back to the ground when the leaves start to die. They are very hardy, and will come back in the spring.
