WIJSLT: The Demon King (Seven Realms #1) (NS)

I just started it this morning.  I'm still waiting for it to suck me in, because I'm only about 25 minutes into it.

Just based on those 25 minutes, though, it feels - I don't know - young?  I know it's YA, but it feels like young YA so far.  Obviously it's very early to place judgment, and I'm not, I'm just throwing out my first impression.  I'm excited to get more into it based on how much you all seem to rave about this series.

The narrator is good though.  I forget who he reminds me of now, but there is an actor that he sounds like.  I'll remember as soon as I get in the car.

  • Huh- I am reading these right now and I am not ashamed to say I didn't realize I was reading YA books. Didn't come across that way at all!

  • It never felt especially young to me, either. But I read the book and didn't listen to it.

  • I'm glad to hear that from both of you.  Like I said, I just started it this morning, so I haven't really gotten into it yet.  This was just a first impression, and maybe it's the wizard factor - they were talking about slang terms for wizards, and it all felt kind of juvenile.  But I'm only at the very beginning, so I'm glad to hear that my first impression is likely wrong.
  • Oh, yeah, I guess I can see that now. I do remember that it takes a bit to really get into the series, and the first book isn't the best of them. WELL worth it, though!

  • Don't expect it to get awesome too terribly soon -- as it might not.

The first book in this series was 3 stars for me.  The second book was 4.  And the last two books were 5 stars.  So glad I stuck with it!!

  • I wasn't really sucked in until around page 150 if I remember correctly.

  • Keep going with it. It definitely felt YA to me but I loved the series, it just gets better as it goes.

  • It never struck me as that young, but I read it instead of listened to it. It sucked me in after about 100 pages.

  • I started by listening and then also reading the hard copy. It did seem kind of young to me and unfortunately sort of stuck with me for nearly the whole series. Disown me now: I liked the books but I finished them out because everyone raves about them. It didn't come close to being my favorite series.

  • I'm more into it now that I've listened to some more.  Paranormal stuff always takes me a little bit to get into, just because it's outside the box for me and I have to readjust my thinking to allow the universe created by the author to take hold.  I really appreciate the responses, though - thanks for confirming that my first impression was probably inaccurate, and for getting me more excited about the series as a whole.

I said paranormal stuff is outside the box for me, but I'm currently listening to this and reading The Dream Thieves.  Ha!
