Vacation recs

Hey all! I know I haven't been around all the much lately. Work has been crazy, and I've been in a book funk. Anyway, DH and I are going to Hawaii next week with my sister and BIL. I need recs for the beach! What has even been popular around here lately? I feel so left out!

  • We're going to Maui!

  • Jealous!  Maui is awesome!

Here are the last few really good ones I've read:
This Song Will Save Your Life by Leila Sales
The Sea of Tranquility by Katja Millay
Me Before You (though I was a little behind on that one) and The Girl You Left Behind by Jojo Moyes
Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell (and I'm currently reading Fangirls also by her, which I'm really enjoying so far)

Also, I haven't read them yet but Isla and the Happily Ever After by Stephanie Perkins and Just One Year by Gayle Forman (in the Just One Day series) have been pretty popular.  And if you've read the Divergent series, the third one comes out next week and is available for pre-order.

@krscrp83 Is Isla and the Happily Ever After out yet?  I thought it was coming out next year.

I want to get Allegiant, but I would rather have a paper copy of it, and I don't feel like lugging the big hardback to Hawaii.  Plus I'm not sure I will have time to go to the store next Tuesday to buy it.

I do have Sea of Tranquility on my Nook, and Eleanor and Park is on my TBR list!

  • Maui was my husband's favorite island!  Are you going to do the Road to Hana?  If so, I have some "must stops" along the way!

Oh, we're supposed to be talking about books...

Slide and Imposter by Jill Hathaway
Sultry Springs series by Macy Beckett
    Wanderlove by Kirsten Hubbard
The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight by Jennifer E. Smith

  • @packfan20 I want to do the road to Hana. One person told my BIL not to do it, and said that it was not worth the 7 hours that it takes. I've heard from other people to do it, so recommendations for that will be taken as well!

  • So, we were gone for 14 hours the day we did the Road to Hana.  It's not scary at all but totally wind-y so if you get motion sickness...  If you just drive the road and don't stop, it would be pretty dull.  We had recs and a map from a friend so we stopped a lot but these are places I would recommend.

    - Ke'Anae Abortetum.  Talk a walk through it and come across the Rainbow Eucalyptus trees.  Totally something out of a Dr. Seuss book.
-Ke'Anae Park.  Lava rocks.  Pretty darn cool.
    - Wai'anapanapa State Park/Pailoa Bay.  There is a black sand beach.  This is the most beautiful place I have ever seen.  A-M-A-Z-I-N-G.
-Seven Sacred Pools.  You can swim in them but don't take a lot to carry or anything valuable as it's a trek to get to them.

Also, make sure you check out the Banyan Tree in Lahaina.

We snorkeled at Molokini with the Pride of Maui tour and drove up to Haleakala National Park (so cool being ABOVE the clouds.)

    Okay, I'll shut up now.

Eeek.. I don't know why I thought it was out!  Maybe I've just seen posts about people anticipating it.  Never mind! :P

  • And I totally agree with @packfan20 - if you make those stops (we made most of the same ones in her list) the Road to Hana is SO worth it!  The Banyan Tree in Lahaina is very cool as well.

We also did Haleakala - we were driven up in the morning and then given bikes and we biked down.  It was awesome, and while it's a long ride, 95% of it is downhill so you coast a lot of the way.  We did this through the Haleakala Bike Company and it was very fun and the views were spectacular.

@KrsCrp83 DH and I decided not to do the bike thing on Haleakala for whatever reason.  And then were glad because we were bummed to see that you just biked down the road.  I don't know what we expected but biking down the side of a road, dodging cars...I can do that here.
:P Glad you enjoyed it, though!

@packfan20, we did it on a weekday, so we didn't have to dodge many cars, we rode in the middle of the road for most of it.  But that's a good point - I'd imagine that on a weekend, it would be much more crowded and not nearly as much fun!
