DPN's

Lurker here,

I'm looking to get a set of DPN's as I want to start knitting socks and mittens and so such. I've done magic loop before but I actually don't mind DPN's.

If you use DPN's what size (4", 5", 6", 8") and material (wood, metal, plastic) do you use most.

TIA

Re: DPN's

  • I have some 7" bamboo DPNs I use them for almost everything, unless I am knitting something that is really wide. I personally love bamboo - I started on metal and found them to be a little slippery, which caused me to make a lot of mistakes.

Do you use other needles now? Material type is largely a personal choice, so trying a few different types out for yourself might be a big help.
  • I'm exactly opposite of you, kwkinzel.  I tried bamboo and absolutely hated how "sticky" they were, so I went to metal.

I prefer magic loop.  I have less problem with "ladders" (the stretched out stitch when you go from one needle to the next).

It's totally personal preference.  What size yarn are you going to use for the items you're planning to knit on your DPNs?  Buy the size that goes with the yarn.
  • Another vote for bamboo! I make more mistakes with metal, and find them too slippy.  I'm not sure what sizes I have, as they are at home, but mine are definitely on the smaller end.
