NBR: Salem, MA

Does anyone have recommendations for Salem, MA?  My H and I are planning to go for a day trip this weekend.  Our plan is to stay outside of Boston Friday and then drive into Salem on Saturday.  Ideally, I would love to get a recommendation for a place to park and some neat things to check out while we are there. Restaurant suggestions would be great, too.

  • I haven't been since I was a kid, but I remember thinking that the House of Seven Gables was pretty neat.  Others might be able to tell you if it's worth the admission price.

  • I haven't been in about 4 or 5 years, but I think the last time I went we just parked on the street right downtown. We went on the walking tour witch/ghost hunt at night which was fairly interesting. They take you around to all of the most hunted areas and tell you who haunts each place. We walked by the House of Seven Gables but didn't go in. That house is super creepy looking at night! I can't remember where we ate at all so I'm no help there!

  • We went last week.  We ended up parking outside of the downtown area on the street because everywhere else was full.  Expect it to be crowded, but awesome!  We walked a big part of the area, but the only tour we did was the Witch Museum.  It was really interesting, but shorter than I thought it would be.  You might want to take time to check out the Maritime History stuff as well.  We'll go back again and definitely be doing a tour or a haunted house or both next time.
  • I just went this past weekend. I assume pricing and availability may be jacked the closer you get to Salem this time of year.

It was packed last weekend and I was told that was nothing compared to what next weekend will be. So expect crowds and waits.
We did hit the Witch Dungeon Museum- it had a reenactment of the Salem Witch Trials and then you go down to see what the dungeons had looked like back in the day. It was only $8 but I liked it!

We tried to do the House of Seven Gables- but the tours were sold out. So if you want to do that plan ahead.

  • My favorites are the House of Seven Gables and the Witch museum. We've always parked in all-day parking lots.

Last time we went (which was 10 years ago) we went on Halloween which was awesome. We went to Salem Beer Works for dinner and it was pretty good. We were celebrating DHs 21st birthday and BIL ordered a bunch of unique beer flavors and everyone really enjoyed them.

  • My girlfriends and I went a couple of years ago.  We parked in an all day lot, it was maybe $15?

Beer Works had great pumpkin beer, but we didn't eat there at all.  Come to think of it, other than House of Seven Gables and a Ghost Tour that we abandoned half way through because it was lame, we didn't do much else other than drinking, wandering and people watching.  Oh!  A psychic fair, too.  I'm not really a fan of Salem at Halloween, because it's such a clusterfuck of crowds.  Great people watching, though.
  • House of Seven Gables sounds like a winner.  If we can't get in, we will probably try the Witch Dungeon Museum.  It looks like a great option!  Thanks for the suggestions- it's good to know to bring a little cash for parking. I'm really looking forward to seeing it, even if there's a crowd.

We LOVED Keene! It was such a fun town and everyone was friendly. In fact, we debated between going back for the Pumpkin Fest or going to Salem.
